Chapter 5 - The War Room at Vale Spire

By 8:00 p.m., Colton had transformed the top-floor executive conference room of Vale Spire into a tactical command center.
The glass walls overlooked the sparkling Seattle skyline, but inside, the lights were dimmed. Spread across the massive mahogany conference table were not financial spreadsheets or acquisition contracts, but private investigator files, old bank statements, and estate documents dating back twenty-five years.
Maris Klein stood near the projection screen, clicking through a series of digital files with trembling fingers.
“I pulled every archived financial record from the Vale Foundation between the years my mother worked there and the present,” Maris reported, her professional demeanor masking deep unease. “Colton... you were right. There’s a shell company called Vanguard Holdings that received anonymous monthly payouts totaling over twelve million dollars over the last two decades. And the signature authorizing those payouts wasn't your mother’s.”
Colton leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of scotch. His eyes were dark and focused.
“Whose signature is it?”
“Your mother’s personal attorney, Harrison Vance,” Maris said, clicking to the next slide. “Wait—no, not just her attorney. Look at who currently owns controlling shares of Vanguard Holdings.”
A corporate registry document flashed on the screen.
Colton’s eyes narrowed.
The name on the screen wasn't Harrison Vance. It wasn't Eleanor Vale.
It was Julian Vale—Colton’s cousin, who had supposedly been living off a trust fund in Europe for the last five years.
“Julian,” Colton murmured, the pieces suddenly snapping into place with terrifying clarity. “He wasn't in Europe. He was managing the blackmail operation after my mother died.”
“It gets worse,” Maris added, her voice dropping. “I ran a trace on the IP address of the last email sent to Chloe Rivera before she vanished six months ago. The message told her to meet someone at the downtown docks to receive a settlement check from the estate.”
Colton stood up so abruptly his chair rolled back and hit the glass wall with a dull thud.
“Where was the email sent from?”
“The private terminal registered to Julian’s penthouse in Bellevue,” Maris said quietly.
Colton didn't hesitate. He grabbed his tailored overcoat off the back of the chair, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line.
“Maris, contact Marcus Vance at the state police,” Colton ordered, buttoning his coat. “Tell him we have probable cause for an immediate search and seizure warrant on Julian’s penthouse for kidnapping and financial extortion.”

“And you?” Maris asked, wide-eyed.
“I’m going to go have a family reunion.”
