Chapter 13 - The Uninvited Guest

Life at the Oak Ridge farmhouse settled into a rhythm of healing, routine, and unexpected joy. Chloe was slowly regaining her confidence, spending her afternoons tending to the newly planted vegetable garden with Solana, while Junie attended kindergarten just down the road.
Then, on a crisp Friday afternoon in late November, a sleek black town car rolled up the gravel driveway, parking right beside Colton’s sedan.
Solana stopped watering the hydrangeas near the porch, her breath catching in her throat.
The back door of the car opened, and a tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal wool coat stepped out. Her silver-streaked hair was styled in an immaculate chignon, and her sharp, assessing eyes scanned the farmhouse with a mixture of disbelief and entitlement.
It was Beatrice Vale—Colton’s estranged aunt, who had spent the last thirty years living in Paris, entirely detached from the family’s Seattle scandals.
“Solana Rivera,” Beatrice said, her voice dripping with chilly aristocratic disdain as she walked up the wooden steps. “I never thought I’d see the day when a common domestic servant was playing lady of the manor in a house bought with Vale money.”
Solana stood her ground, setting the watering can down with a steady, firm clunk. “Beatrice. What are you doing here? Colton isn't home.”
“I didn't come to see Colton. I came to see the circus he’s created,” Beatrice snapped, pushing past Solana without an invitation and stepping directly into the living room.

Chloe, who had been folding laundry on the sofa, froze, staring at the woman who looked terrifyingly like the mother who had tortured her childhood.
