Chapter 2 - Inside the VaultWithin twenty minutes, I was no longer standing in the Emerald Room of The Sterling.

Dominic had bypassed the restaurant entirely, pulling me out through a private exit and ushering me into the back of a bulletproof Maybach. Two black-suit bodyguards flanked the doors, and before I could even process what was happening, the car was slicing through the wet Manhattan streets toward the Upper East Side.

The destination wasn't a corporate office. It was a private limestone townhouse surrounded by heavy iron gates and state-of-the-art biometric security.

Inside, the home smelled of old paper, leather, and expensive bourbon. Dominic led me past a series of heavy security doors down into a subterranean basement. But calling it a basement was an insult. It was a high-tech subterranean laboratory and archive combined, illuminated by crisp LED tracks and lined with climate-controlled glass cases.

And right in the center of the room, resting on a steel examination table, was a massive open ledger surrounded by digital projection screens.

"This," Dominic said, gesturing to the room, "is where I’ve spent forty million dollars and the last five years of my life trying to crack the 'Russo Legacy.' My grandfather left me this estate, a fortune, and one final instruction: Find the key, or lose everything."

I walked slowly toward the table, my eyes scanning the digital projections. They showed intricate architectural blueprints of a subterranean structure, complex astronomical charts, and symbols that matched the ones in the leather journal word for word.

"My father worked with you," I stated, realization dawning as pieces of my childhood clicked into place. "When I was ten... he used to leave for weeks at a time. He told me he was doing consulting work for a private collector. That collector was you."

"Not just a collector," Dominic corrected, stepping up beside me. He reached into his coat and pulled out a heavy gold pocket watch, clicking it open to reveal an engraving of the exact same crest stamped into the journal's cover. "Your father was my partner. We were searching for the lost catacombs beneath New York—not the subway tunnels or the sewer systems people talk about, but the original colonial vaults built before the city was even mapped. Vaults containing something far more valuable than gold."

"What kind of something?" I asked, my breath hitching.

Dominic turned his head, looking deep into my eyes. "The founding blueprint of a secret society that controlled the financial bloodline of the early Americas. And whoever controls the vault controls the legacy."

"And my father?" I pressed, my voice dropping to a whisper. "If you guys were partners, why did he die broke? Why did he spend his final years drinking himself to sleep in a cramped apartment, muttering about being betrayed?"

Dominic flinched, the harsh light catching the sudden pain in his expression. "Because someone inside my inner circle didn't want the journal decoded. Someone tried to kill him, Olivia. And if you translate the rest of that book... they're going to come for you, too."
