Chapter 11 - The Bitter Truth Revealed

The iron cell doors of the Oak Haven jail clanged shut with a finality that made Clement Reed flinch. The former mayor pressed his manicured hands against the cold steel bars, his face twisted in a mask of sheer panic.

"You can't do this to me!" Reed screamed, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls. "I am the law in this county! The judge is a personal friend of mine, he’ll have you all hanging by sunset!"

Standing just outside the cell block, Thomas Dalton adjusted the collar of his heavy wool coat. His eyes were cold, stripped of the weariness that had weighed him down in the mountain tunnel. Beside him, Josephine stood tall, her hand resting firmly on fourteen-year-old Wyatt’s shoulder.

"The judge was a friend of yours when he was on your payroll, Clement," Thomas said evenly, pulling a thick stack of ledger pages from his pocket and sliding them across the wooden desk. "But federal marshals don't take bribes with gold stolen from the Silver Creek Mint. Your signature is on every single transfer order. Your career is over."

Reed stared at the papers, his bravado instantly evaporating. His knees buckled, and he slid slowly down the iron bars until he was sitting on the concrete floor, clutching his head in his hands.

From the adjacent cell, Marcus Vance let out a low, gravelly chuckle. The enforcer’s injured leg was tightly bandaged, but his eyes still burned with malice.

"Don't look so smug, Dalton," Vance sneered from the shadows. "You think locking us up fixes everything? You think the syndicate is just a couple of corrupt politicians in a sleepy mountain town? The men backing Reed run half the territory. They own the judges, the freight lines, and the governors. By next week, we’ll be out on bail, and the first place we’re riding to is Bitter Peak."

Josephine stepped forward, her gaze piercing through the gloom of the cell. "Let them try, Marcus. My husband survived your mines, and my family survived your winter ambushes. If your bosses want Bitter Peak, they’ll have to climb over all of us."
