Chapter 17 - The Chains of Bitter Peak

"You can't take him!"

Wyatt burst through the cabin door, stepping directly in front of Gideon with his hand hovering over his revolver. "He saved our lives! He protected my family when the whole town wanted us dead!"

"Wyatt, stand down," Gideon commanded softly, placing a heavy hand on the boy's shoulder and pushing him gently aside.

"Gideon—" Josephine began, stepping onto the porch with tears welling in her eyes.

"Take care of the children, Josephine," Gideon said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that spoke volumes. "This mountain belongs to you now. Don't let them take it back."

Before Josephine could reach out to stop him, Marshal Thorne’s deputies stepped forward, snapping heavy iron manacles around Gideon’s wrists. Another set of cuffs was locked onto Thomas’s wrists.

As the deputies marched their prisoners down the snowy trail toward a waiting carriage at the base of the mountain, Wyatt clenched his fists so hard his nails dug into his palms, drawing blood.

"We can't just let them take him, Mama," Wyatt whispered, his voice trembling with helpless fury. "If they take Pa and Gideon to Denver, they'll hang them before a judge even hears their defense."

"They aren't going to Denver," Josephine said, her voice suddenly dropping into a fierce, steely resolve that surprised even her. She turned back inside the cabin, walking straight to the hidden armory panel behind the animal pelts.

Clara watched her mother in bewilderment. "Mama, what are you doing?"

Josephine pulled open the heavy wooden panel, revealing the rows of rifles, ammunition crates, and sticks of dynamite that Gideon had spent years collecting. She reached up and grabbed a heavy leather cartridge belt, strapping it around her waist with practiced precision.

"They think they’ve won because they have badges and warrants," Josephine said, cocking a Winchester rifle with a sharp, echoing clack. She looked around the room at her children, her eyes burning with an indomitable fire.

"Pack your bags," Josephine commanded. "We're going to war."
