Chapter 16 - The Writ of Treason

Three days after the explosion on the southern ridge, the storm clouds broke, revealing a brilliant, piercing blue sky. But the peace on Bitter Peak was shattered before noon.

A sharp, authoritative knock echoed against the heavy oak cabin door.

It wasn't the tentative rap of a bounty hunter or the frantic pounding of a panicked messenger. It was the rhythmic, formal knock of federal authority.

Gideon walked slowly to the door, his hand resting on the grip of his revolver. He threw the bolt and pulled it open.

Standing on the porch was a tall, immaculate man wearing a pristine federal marshal’s uniform, accompanied by six armed deputies carrying repeating rifles. Pinned to the marshal's chest was a gleaming gold star, and in his hand, he held a thick parchment document sealed with heavy red wax.

"Gideon Hayes?" the marshal asked, his voice crisp and devoid of emotion.

"Depends who's asking," Gideon replied, not moving an inch from the doorway.

"I am United States Marshal Vance Thorne," the officer stated, unfolding the parchment. "I hold a federal warrant issued by the territorial supreme court in Denver. You are hereby ordered to surrender yourself, along with Thomas Dalton, for charges of armed insurrection, theft of federal gold, and treason against the United States government."

Inside the cabin, the blood drained from Josephine’s face. Thomas stepped forward, pushing past Gideon onto the porch.

"Treason?!" Thomas shouted, his face flushing with rage. "Are you out of your mind? We are the victims here! Clement Reed and the Silver Creek syndicate stole our land, framed me for murder, and tried to wipe out my family!"

Marshal Thorne didn't blink. "Mr. Reed is currently awaiting trial in Oak Haven for financial crimes, yes. But the evidence presented to the federal court this morning proves that the gold used to pay off your debts and the weapons stockpiled in this cabin were stolen from a secret government transit shipment five years ago. And the man who orchestrated that heist... was Gideon Hayes."

Gideon stared at the marshal, his expression darkening into a dangerous, icy glare.

"Sterling," Gideon muttered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth.

"Mr. Sterling sends his regards," Marshal Thorne replied coldly, raising his hand. The six deputies immediately raised their rifles, leveling them directly at Gideon and Thomas. "Step away from the door, gentlemen. Put your hands behind your back. Any resistance will be met with immediate lethal force."
