Chapter 13 - The Siege of Bitter Peak

"Down! Everybody down!"
Gideon shoved Wyatt through the front door, kicking it shut behind them just as a volley of rifle fire rained down upon the cabin. The heavy oak doors groaned under the impact, but held firm.
Inside, chaos erupted momentarily before training took over. Thomas Dalton grabbed a Winchester from the wall rack, handing it to Josephine, while Clara quickly herded the younger twins and Seth toward the reinforced safety of the subterranean storm cellar.
"Where are they?" Thomas shouted over the deafening cracks of gunfire echoing off the mountain rocks.
"Ridge line, six hundred yards out," Gideon barked, calmly loading his own repeating rifle as he peered through the narrow iron firing slit. "Professional sharpshooters. Mauser bolt-action rifles with telescopic sights. They aren't local bounty hunters—they’re Pinkerton mercenaries hired by the syndicate."
"How many?" Josephine asked, her hands steady as she checked the chambers of her ten-gauge shotgun.
"At least five up on the north ridge," Gideon replied, his eyes narrowing. "And more moving up the southern switchback. They want to pin us down and burn the cabin out."
"They won't get close enough to strike a match," Thomas muttered grimly, taking his position at the eastern window.
For the next two hours, the cabin became a fortress under siege. The mercenaries rained wave after wave of suppressive fire down upon the roof, splintering the shingles and chipping away at the stone chimney. But Gideon’s structural reinforcements held firm. Every time a mercenary attempted to close the distance across the exposed open ground, Gideon or Wyatt returned fire with lethal, calculated precision.
Yet, as the afternoon shadows lengthened, Gideon noticed a terrifying detail through his field glasses.
"They aren't just trying to shoot us out," Gideon cursed, lowering the glasses. "Look at the southern ridge."

Thomas and Josephine looked through the adjacent slits. Moving up the steep, snow-covered incline were three men carrying heavy iron canisters and wooden crates marked with skull-and-crossbones warning labels.
"Dynamite," Josephine gasped, her face turning pale. "They're going to blow the foundation."
