Chapter 18 - The Train to Nowhere

The private armored train hissed loudly as it sat idling on the private tracks just outside the Silver Creek railway siding, steam venting from its heavy iron pistons into the freezing mountain air.
Inside the reinforced passenger car, Gideon Hayes and Thomas Dalton sat shackled to iron rings bolted to the floorboards. Across from them sat Mr. Sterling, swirling a glass of amber whiskey, a smug, untouchable smile gracing his lips.
"You really thought you could beat the system, didn't you, Gideon?" Sterling chuckled, taking a slow sip of his drink. "You live like a wild animal in the mountains for ten years, thinking you're a ghost. But wealth and power don't care about your little vendettas. When this train crosses the territorial line into Denver tonight, you'll both be tried in a closed military court. Case closed. Verdict rendered."
Gideon didn't flinch. He leaned back against the cold iron wall, his chains clinking softly as he moved.
"You missed a spot, Sterling," Gideon said quietly.
Sterling raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"You left the widow on the mountain," Gideon replied, a faint, grim smile touching his scarred lips. "You think she's just a helpless mother protecting her children. But you don't know what a woman will do when you try to take her world away twice."
Before Sterling could formulate a reply, the train car suddenly shuddered violently.
CRASH!
The screech of tearing metal echoed through the carriage as the front engine abruptly derailed, sending glassware shattering and throwing the guards off balance.

"What in God's name was that?!" Sterling shouted, dropping his whiskey glass as it smashed against the floor.
Outside, rapid gunfire erupted, followed by the terrifying, familiar sound of a galloping horse charging right alongside the moving train.
