CHAPTER 4 — “The Woman Who Fed Him”

Jonathan asked for one person.
Not the CEO.
Not the board.
Not Melissa.
He asked for the night janitor.
A young woman named Grace Miller.
Everyone looked confused.
Grace was twenty-six, quiet, and invisible to most of the company.
She cleaned floors after midnight.
She ate lunch alone.
And every evening, before leaving work, she would place a warm coffee and sandwich near the bench outside.
For the homeless man.
She never knew his name.
She never asked for thanks.
She simply said, “No one should sleep hungry.”
When Grace entered the lobby, she froze.
“Sir…?”
Jonathan smiled for the first time.
“You remembered how I take my coffee.”
Grace looked embarrassed.
“Two sugars. No cream.”
A few employees lowered their heads.
Because many of them had laughed at her for helping him.
Melissa had once called her “pathetic.”
Now Jonathan turned to Richard.
“Read the document.”
Richard opened a sealed envelope with trembling hands.
His voice shook as he read aloud.
“Effective immediately, Grace Miller is appointed interim executive director of the Harrington Foundation…”
Gasps filled the room.
“…with full authority over the company’s charitable division and a starting budget of fifty million dollars.”
Grace covered her mouth.
“No… sir, I can’t…”
Jonathan looked at her gently.
“You already did.”
Then his face hardened.
He turned toward Melissa.
“As for you…”
Melissa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Please. I made one mistake.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“No.”
“You made one choice.”
“And choices reveal character.”
Before he could finish, the main doors burst open.
Two police officers entered.
Behind them came an elderly woman in black.
The moment Jonathan saw her…
His face changed.
Shock.
Pain.
Rage.
The woman smiled coldly.
“Hello, Jonathan.”
The lobby went silent.
Richard whispered:
“That’s impossible…”
Jonathan stared at her like he had seen a ghost.
Because the woman standing in front of him…
May you like
Was his wife.
The same wife everyone believed had died twenty years ago.
