CHAPTER 5 — “The Dead Woman Was Alive”

Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
Jonathan Harrington stared at the elegant woman standing beneath the crystal chandelier.
Twenty years.
Twenty years he had mourned her.
Twenty years believing his wife, Evelyn Harrington, had died in a devastating yacht explosion off the coast of Maine.
Yet there she stood.
Perfectly dressed.
Not a single wrinkle of fear on her face.
"Jonathan."
Her voice was as calm as if they'd been apart for only a weekend.
"You look... different."
Jonathan's weathered hands trembled.
"I buried an empty coffin."
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"You buried a lie."
The room exploded with whispers.
Richard Bennett's face turned white.
"Mrs. Harrington..."
"I attended your funeral."
"So did half the country."
Evelyn slowly walked toward Jonathan.
"I never wanted to disappear."
"I was forced to."
Jonathan's eyes narrowed.
"By whom?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she glanced toward the board of directors.
One by one...
Several elderly executives lowered their heads.
Jonathan noticed.
His heartbeat accelerated.
"You knew."
Richard couldn't even meet his eyes.
"We... we thought you were dead."
"No."
Jonathan growled.
"You thought I would never come back."
Silence.
Then Evelyn reached into her designer handbag.
She removed a small silver flash drive.
"This contains every financial record from the last twenty years."
Richard's breathing stopped.
"So that's where it was..."
Jonathan frowned.
"What is it?"
"The proof."
"The proof that someone stole billions of dollars from your company."
Every executive froze.
Melissa looked around in disbelief.
"What are they talking about?"
Evelyn looked directly at Jonathan.
"The yacht explosion wasn't an accident."
"It was an assassination attempt."
"They wanted both of us dead."
Jonathan felt the world spin.
"Who?"
Evelyn slowly raised her hand...
Pointing directly at the chairman.
Richard Bennett.
The entire lobby erupted into chaos.
Richard suddenly backed away.
"No!"
"She's lying!"
But before anyone could react...
Richard reached inside his jacket...
Pulled out a handgun...
May you like
And aimed it directly at Jonathan's chest.
"You should have stayed homeless."
