CHAPTER 7 — “The Waitress Who Wore Her Mother's Necklace”

Jonathan couldn't sleep.
For twenty years...
He had survived winter streets, hunger, humiliation, and loneliness.
None of it compared to the six words Evelyn had written.
Your daughter is still alive.
The next morning, federal investigators surrounded Harrington Global.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Television reporters called Jonathan's return "the greatest corporate mystery in American history."
But Jonathan ignored every microphone.
He had only one question.
"Where is my daughter?"
Evelyn unfolded an old map and pointed to a small coastal town nearly three hundred miles away.
"I lost her the night we escaped."
"What do you mean?"
"They separated us."
"I was told she had died."
"But years later, I received an anonymous letter."
Inside the envelope...
There had been only one photograph.
A teenage girl working in a roadside diner.
Around her neck...
A tiny silver locket.
Jonathan froze.
He recognized it immediately.
"I gave that necklace to our daughter on her fifth birthday."
The photograph was twelve years old.
It was the only clue they had.
Without waiting another second, Jonathan and Evelyn drove through the night.
Hours later...
They arrived at a weathered diner beside an empty highway.
A young waitress walked between the tables carrying coffee.
She looked about twenty-five.
Chestnut hair.
Kind brown eyes.
And around her neck...
Hung the same silver locket.
Jonathan felt his heart stop.
The tray slipped from the waitress's hands as their eyes met.
For reasons she couldn't explain...
She suddenly felt tears filling her eyes.
"Have... have we met before?"
Jonathan couldn't answer.
He simply stared at the necklace.
Finally he whispered,
"What is your name?"
"Emma."
"My name is Emma Carter."
"My adoptive parents found me outside a church when I was five."
Jonathan's hands trembled uncontrollably.
"What was your name... before that?"
Emma slowly touched the locket.
"I don't know."
"But..."
She opened it.
Inside...
Was a tiny faded photograph.
A smiling little girl.
Standing between a man and a woman.
Jonathan collapsed into a chair.
Because the man in the picture...
Was him.
At that exact moment...
The diner's front door burst open.
Three armed men stormed inside.
May you like
"There she is!"
"Take the girl!"
