CHAPTER 3 — "The Detective Recognized the Dog... And Realized the Nightmare Was Far From Over."

The forest was flooded with flashing blue and red lights.
Paramedics rushed the rescued mother into an ambulance while officers searched every inch of the abandoned cabin.
The three children refused to let go of the German Shepherd.
The dog, whose name was Shadow, stayed close to them, licking their faces as if reassuring them that everything would be alright.
Nurse Emily watched in silence.
She had never seen an animal so devoted.
Then Detective Marcus Hale arrived.
A veteran investigator with more than twenty years of experience, Marcus rarely showed emotion.
But the moment he saw the German Shepherd...
His face changed.
"...Shadow?"
The dog immediately turned toward him.
For a brief second, its ears lifted.
Then it cautiously walked over.
Marcus slowly knelt down.
"You remember me, don't you, old friend?"
The officers exchanged confused glances.
"You know this dog?" Officer Daniel asked.
Marcus stroked Shadow's wet fur.
"Five years ago, Shadow belonged to Detective Ethan Brooks... the best K-9 officer this city ever had."
Everyone fell silent.
"Ethan disappeared during an investigation into a human trafficking organization."
"No body was ever found."
"Neither was Shadow."
Marcus looked into the dog's tired eyes.
"We thought they both died."
Emily felt chills run down her spine.
"If Shadow survived..."
"...what if Ethan did too?"
Before anyone could answer, a forensic technician hurried toward them carrying a muddy metal box.
"Detective!"
"You need to see this."
Inside were several fake passports...
Stacks of cash...
A satellite phone...
And dozens of photographs.
Marcus carefully picked up the top picture.
His breathing stopped.
The photo showed Ethan Brooks.
He was tied to a chair.
Bruised.
Bearded.
Clearly alive.
Behind the photo someone had written a message in black marker.
"YOU WERE TOO LATE."
Emily covered her mouth.
"That photo... it looks recent."
Marcus immediately ordered every available officer to expand the search.
Helicopters filled the sky.
Roadblocks appeared across the county.
Meanwhile, doctors fought to stabilize the rescued mother.
Several hours later, she finally regained consciousness.
Emily gently held her hand.
"My name is Emily."
"You're safe."
The woman burst into tears.
"My children..."
"They're alive."
Emily nodded.
"They're waiting for you."
The mother cried with relief before whispering something unexpected.
"You don't understand..."
"There weren't only four of us."
Emily frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The woman's lips trembled.
"There was another prisoner."
"A man."
"They kept him underground."
"He helped us survive."
"He gave food to my children."
"He told me..."
"...if his dog ever escaped..."
"...it would bring the police."
Emily's heart pounded.
"What was his name?"
The woman slowly whispered...
"Ethan."
At that exact moment...
A loud explosion echoed somewhere deep inside the forest.
Everyone outside turned toward the smoke rising above the trees.
