CHAPTER 8 — "The Warehouse Was Empty... Until Shadow Began Digging at the Concrete Floor."

Police surrounded the massive warehouse just before midnight.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Snipers watched every entrance.

Marcus gave the signal.

"Move!"

The doors burst open.

Flashlights swept across the darkness.

Empty crates.

Broken machinery.

Dust everywhere.

No children.

No criminals.

Only silence.

Officer Daniel lowered his weapon.

"We're too late."

But Shadow refused to leave.

The German Shepherd slowly walked deeper into the warehouse, sniffing every corner.

Then he stopped near an old concrete pillar.

He circled it once.

Twice.

Suddenly he began scratching wildly at the floor.

Emily hurried over.

"What is it, boy?"

Shadow barked repeatedly, refusing to move.

Marcus tapped the concrete with the handle of his flashlight.

The sound was hollow.

"There's something underneath."

Construction crews were called immediately.

Within minutes, heavy equipment broke through the thick concrete slab.

A hidden steel hatch appeared beneath the floor.

When officers opened it, a cold rush of air escaped from below.

A narrow tunnel stretched into darkness.

The team moved carefully.

The tunnel led nearly half a mile beneath the warehouse before opening into an enormous underground bunker.

Rows of empty beds lined the walls.

Children's toys lay scattered across the floor.

The place had clearly been abandoned only minutes earlier.

Food was still warm.

Lights were still on.

Someone had escaped in a hurry.

Then Officer Daniel noticed a small girl hiding beneath one of the beds.

She couldn't have been older than six.

She clutched a worn-out teddy bear so tightly her knuckles were white.

Emily knelt beside her.

"It's okay."

"We're here to help."

The little girl slowly pointed toward a large steel map hanging on the wall.

Marcus pulled it down.

Behind it was another room.

Inside were computers, files, surveillance monitors...

...and a giant map covered with colored pins stretching across several states.

Every pin marked another suspected safe house.

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"This network is far bigger than we imagined."

Just then, the little girl whispered something so softly that only Emily heard it.

"He said... he wanted the dog."

Emily frowned.

"Who?"

"The man with the silver watch."

"He said if he caught Shadow..."

"...no one would ever find the others."

At that exact moment, Shadow let out a deep growl.

Everyone turned.

One surveillance monitor, which should have been turned off, suddenly flickered to life.

A masked man appeared on the screen.

He looked directly into the camera and smiled.

"Congratulations, Detective."

"You've been following my clues perfectly."

He paused.

Then removed his glove just enough to reveal a distinctive ring engraved with a family crest.

Marcus's face instantly went pale.

"I know that ring..."

Emily looked at him in shock.

"Whose is it?"

Marcus whispered the answer.

"It belongs to one of the most powerful families in the state."

"And if I'm right..."

"...the man behind all of this has been sitting beside us since the very first day."

The screen went black.

The entire room fell silent.

The final battle had just begun.
