CHAPTER 5 — "Shadow Found One Last Clue... And It Led Police Straight to the Convoy."

The command center exploded into activity.
Maps covered every wall.
Detectives answered ringing phones while officers rushed in and out carrying new evidence.
Ethan Brooks had been taken straight into surgery, but before losing consciousness, he had managed to say one more sentence.
"...check Shadow's harness."
Nurse Emily immediately remembered the heavy black garbage bag the dog had carried into the hospital.
It hadn't been an ordinary bag.
It had been carefully tied onto a specially modified rescue harness.
Officer Daniel removed the harness and examined every strap.
At first, it looked completely ordinary.
Then his fingers stopped.
"There's something sewn inside."
Using a small knife, he carefully opened the thick nylon lining.
A tiny waterproof capsule slid onto the table.
Inside was a micro memory card.
Everyone crowded around as the forensic team loaded it into a computer.
The first video appeared.
It showed Ethan secretly recording inside a dark warehouse.
Rows of metal cages.
Stacks of fake identity documents.
Delivery schedules.
License plate numbers.
Maps with red circles marking several locations.
Then Ethan looked directly into the hidden camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...Shadow made it."
His voice was weak but determined.
"The next transport leaves exactly forty-eight hours after the storm."
"They always use Highway 17."
"The leader never travels with the convoy."
"He watches from a distance."
The room fell completely silent.
Marcus immediately pointed to the screen.
"Zoom in."
The technician enlarged one corner of the video.
A white delivery truck appeared for only a few seconds.
But one small detail stood out.
Its rear door carried a faded blue eagle sticker.
Officer Daniel's eyes widened.
"I've seen that logo before."
He quickly searched the transportation database.
Within minutes, the answer appeared.
The truck belonged to a logistics company that had gone bankrupt almost three years earlier.
Someone had been using its abandoned fleet as cover ever since.
Marcus slammed his fist onto the table.
"They've been hiding in plain sight."
A statewide alert was issued.
Police drones.
Highway patrol.
Helicopters.
Every available unit began searching for white trucks carrying the faded blue eagle symbol.
Meanwhile, Shadow suddenly stood up.
The dog walked to the computer screen...
...and barked directly at another frozen image.
Marcus looked closer.
Hidden behind one of the trucks was a weathered red barn.
On its roof sat a rusted metal windmill.
Emily frowned.
"I know that place."
Everyone turned toward her.
"My grandfather owned a farm near there."
"That barn is less than twenty miles from here."
Marcus didn't waste another second.
"Move!"
Dozens of police vehicles raced through the night.
What none of them realized...
Was that someone inside the department had already warned the criminals.
As the convoy quietly changed direction...
A single encrypted text message appeared on the traffickers' phone.
THE POLICE ARE COMING. CHANGE THE ROUTE.
May you like
Someone on the inside had betrayed them.
