CHAPTER 4 — "Shadow Led Them to the Fire... But What They Found Beneath the Ashes Changed Everything."

Police vehicles raced toward the explosion.

Black smoke billowed into the dark sky.

When they arrived, an old hunting lodge was already engulfed in flames.

Firefighters rushed forward.

Marcus grabbed Shadow's collar.

"No! It's too dangerous!"

But the German Shepherd suddenly broke free.

Without hesitation...

Shadow charged straight into the burning building.

"Shadow!" Emily screamed.

The firefighters tried to stop him.

It was too late.

The dog disappeared into the flames.

Seconds felt like hours.

The roof groaned.

Burning beams crashed to the floor.

Everyone feared the worst.

Then...

A bark echoed from inside.

Marcus didn't hesitate.

Ignoring every warning, he pulled on a breathing mask and ran into the inferno with two firefighters.

The heat was unbearable.

Smoke blinded them.

Then Shadow appeared through the haze.

The dog wasn't running away.

He was barking at the floor.

Again.

And again.

Marcus looked down.

Part of the wooden floor had collapsed.

Beneath it was a hidden steel hatch.

"Axes!" Marcus shouted.

The firefighters smashed through the burning boards.

The hatch finally opened.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Marcus climbed down first.

His flashlight swept across the underground room.

Chains hung from the walls.

Empty food containers covered the floor.

Then...

He froze.

Someone was lying in the corner.

Thin.

Covered in dirt.

Barely breathing.

A long gray beard covered most of his face.

His wrists were scarred by years of restraints.

Marcus slowly knelt beside him.

"Ethan..."

The man's eyelids fluttered.

He struggled to focus.

After a long moment, he whispered only two words.

"Shadow..."

The German Shepherd rushed forward, crying and licking his master's face.

Every officer standing there fell silent.

Even the firefighters lowered their heads.

After five years...

The legendary detective had finally been found alive.

But before Ethan lost consciousness again...

He grabbed Marcus's sleeve with surprising strength.

His voice was weak.

"They're moving..."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Who's moving?"

Ethan forced himself to speak.

"The children..."

"There are dozens of them..."

Marcus's blood ran cold.

"What are you talking about?"

Ethan's eyes filled with fear.

"This wasn't one cabin."

"It was only one stop."

"They have more locations."

"They're taking another group..."

"...tonight."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Marcus immediately grabbed his radio.

"All units!"

"This investigation is no longer a kidnapping."

"We're dealing with a nationwide trafficking network."

"Every available officer—move now!"

Far away...

On a lonely highway...

A black truck quietly crossed the county line.

Inside its cargo compartment...

Small frightened voices could be heard crying in the darkness.

And the driver smiled...

Because he believed no one knew where he was going.

He had no idea...

May you like

Shadow had already left one more clue behind.
