Marcus couldn't take his eyes off the frozen image on the monitor.
That silver ring...
He had seen it many times before.
Not at crime scenes.

Police fundraisers.
Children's hospitals.
It belonged to billionaire philanthropist Richard Ashcroft, chairman of the Ashcroft Foundation—a man celebrated across the country for donating millions to orphanages, medical centers, and rescue programs.
"No..." Officer Daniel whispered.
"It can't be him."
Marcus's jaw tightened.

"He has access to hospitals, politicians, police officials... and no one ever questions him."
Emily suddenly remembered something.
"The day Shadow arrived at the hospital..."
"There was a charity event."
Marcus looked at her.
"Who organized it?"
Emily's face turned pale.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The hospital access.
The abandoned warehouses.

Marcus immediately requested a warrant.

Then sprinted down a narrow maintenance corridor.
"Follow him!" Marcus shouted.
The team raced after the dog.
At the end of the passage stood a reinforced metal wall.
Shadow barked wildly.
Marcus noticed fresh scratches around a ventilation panel.
He ripped it open.
Behind it was a hidden emergency tunnel.
One by one, the children crawled through to safety.
Just as the last child emerged...
A massive explosion shook the bunker.
The underground command center collapsed behind them.
The criminals had destroyed years of evidence.
But they had failed to destroy the most important witnesses.
Outside, helicopters filled the sky.
News crews arrived from every major network.
The country watched the rescue unfold live.
Yet one person remained missing.
Richard Ashcroft had vanished.
No one knew where he had gone.
Except Shadow.
