Chapter 15 - The Trap Springs

The heavy steel door of the server room slid open with a slow, grinding hiss. A single silhouette stood in the doorway, framed by the dim amber emergency lighting of the hallway.

It wasn't Eleanor.

It was Jonathan Vance, former senior board member and my father’s oldest, most trusted ally—the man who had supposedly signed over his proxy rights to Eleanor three days ago. But Jonathan wasn't holding a briefcase or legal papers. He was holding a heavy caliber suppressed pistol, pointed directly at my chest.

"I told your father years ago that sentimentality would ruin this family," Jonathan said calmly, stepping into the room, his footsteps echoing softly against the concrete floor. "He wanted to play games with half-brothers and secret trusts. I just wanted to keep the machine running."

I slowly stood up from the console, putting myself between Jonathan and Marissa, keeping my hands visible. "You sold us out to Eleanor. All this time, you were the one feeding her the internal audits."

"Eleanor is a useful idiot," Jonathan corrected with a cold smile, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "She thinks she’s reclaiming her birthright. In reality, once she signs the final asset transfer over to my offshore holding firm, she’ll be quietly retired back to her Swiss clinic, permanently."

Raymond tried to stand up from his chair, clutching his chest. "Jonathan... you're committing corporate treason. The federal marshals—"

"The federal marshals are currently three hours away, dealing with a fabricated bomb threat at the federal courthouse across town," Jonathan interrupted, never breaking eye contact with me. "By the time they realize it’s a distraction, this foundation will be liquidated, the accounts will be scrubbed clean, and Adrian Whitmore will be found dead in a tragic server room electrical accident."

Marissa didn't scream. She didn't cower. With a speed and precision that caught Jonathan completely off guard, she grabbed a heavy steel wrench off the maintenance table beside her and hurled it directly at his face.

Jonathan ducked instinctively, the heavy tool glancing off his shoulder with a dull thud. His pistol jerked upward, firing a muffled shot that shattered the glass casing of the server rack behind us, showering the room in a storm of sparks and electrical smoke.

"Run!" I yelled, grabbing Marissa’s hand and shoving her toward the emergency maintenance stairwell behind the server racks.

Jonathan recovered instantly, shouting obscenities as he swung the pistol back toward us. "Stop them!"
