Chapter 8 - Checkmate

"I must admit, Adrian, I underestimated your desperation," my father said, stepping closer, the barrel of the gun steady as a rock. "Breaking back into your own building like a common criminal. The security footage will show you trying to sabotage the servers. It’s poetic, really."

Marissa stepped instinctively in front of me, shielding me with her body. "Leave him alone, Richard. It's over. The federal agents already have the files."

My father laughed, a sharp, ugly sound. "The federal agents won't receive a damn thing, my dear. I cut the building's external communication lines an hour ago. No data goes out of this tower without my authorization."

He raised the pistol slightly, aiming at the server console behind us. "Now, Adrian... type the override code to transfer the remaining stock back to my personal portfolio, or I’ll make sure neither of you leaves this room alive."

I looked at my father, seeing not a parent, but a cornered animal desperate to protect his illusion of absolute power. I slowly raised my hands toward the keyboard, my fingers hovering over the glowing keys.

"You always loved control, didn't you, Dad?" I said softly.

"Control is the only thing that matters in this world," he replied, stepping closer, eager to watch me type his victory.

"You're right," I whispered. "It is."

Instead of typing the transfer code, I slammed my palm down onto the emergency master broadcast button integrated into Nathan’s legacy terminal.

Instantly, every speaker, monitor, and emergency screen across the entire 40-floor skyscraper flared to life. The automated dead man's switch protocol executed, bypassing the physical exterior lines by routing the encrypted files directly through an independent satellite uplink Nathan had installed a decade ago.

A synthesized voice echoed through the massive tower: “Transfer complete. Federal indictment files dispatched to the Department of Justice.”

My father’s face froze in absolute horror. He lunged forward, pulling the trigger, but Marissa shoved me hard to the side. The bullet shattered the glass paneling inches from my head, showering us in glittering shards of crystal.

Before he could fire a second shot, the heavy steel security doors of the server room blew open with a deafening crash. Federal marshals, led by armed tactical units, poured into the room, their weapons drawn and focused entirely on my father.

"Richard Whitmore, drop the weapon! You're under federal arrest!"
