Chapter 27 - The Uninvited Guest

Life at the estate settled into a rhythm of peace, purpose, and community building. The foundation flourished, city politics stabilized under new, transparent leadership, and little Owen took his first official steps on the very lawn where my grandfather had once taught me how to throw a baseball.

Then came a rainy Tuesday evening exactly one year after I had first overheard Marissa asking her mother for twenty-eight dollars.

We were sitting in the newly renovated family kitchen, helping Owen stack wooden blocks, when the heavy front doorbell chimed through the manor.

I paused, frowning slightly. Visitors at the estate were rare, and security protocols required all scheduled guests to clear the front gate intercom.

"Did you invite someone over?" Marissa asked, setting her coffee mug down.

"No," I replied, standing up and wiping my hands on a kitchen towel. "Stay here with Owen."

I walked through the long hallway, flipping on the exterior porch lights, and pulled open the heavy front door.

Standing on the porch, drenched in the cold autumn rain, was a young woman in her early twenties. She wore a worn canvas jacket, her dark hair plastered to her face, shivering violently. But it wasn't her appearance that made my blood run cold.

It was her eyes.

They were the unmistakable, piercing Whitmore blue eyes.

"Can I help you?" I asked, keeping my voice cautious as I stepped into the doorway.

The woman swallowed hard, clutching a worn leather notebook against her chest like a shield. "My name is Claire," she whispered, her voice trembling from the cold. "Claire Whitmore. And I think... I'm your cousin."
