Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Machine

The holding room in the federal detention center smelled of cheap floor wax and stale coffee. I sat across the metal table, staring at my hands, which were cuffed together. They had moved fast. Within twelve hours of my father’s coup, my bank accounts were frozen, my security clearance was revoked, and federal agents had hauled me in for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and Raymond Pierce walked in, looking older and more exhausted than ever. He sat down opposite me and slid a small flash drive across the table.
"They locked you out completely," Raymond murmured, keeping his voice low. "The board has been replaced with your father's loyalists. Apex Global has acquired controlling interest."
"Is there any way out?" I asked, looking him straight in the eye. "Or did my father win?"
Raymond gave a thin, grim smile. "Your father is arrogant, Adrian. He forgot the one rule of building an empire: never leave your digital footprint on a server you don't physically control."
He tapped the flash drive. "Nathan Keane wasn't just a disgruntled relative. Before he died, he worked as a senior network architect for Whitmore’s internal cybersecurity division. He knew your father’s paranoia better than anyone."
I leaned in. "What are you saying?"
"Nathan left a dead man's switch," Raymond said quietly. "If anyone ever tampered with the primary family trust or tried to disinherit his bloodline using fraudulent shell companies, an automated protocol would trigger. It’s a master archive containing every illegal wire transfer, every offshore account, and every bribe your father paid over the last twenty years."
"Where is it?"
"It uploads automatically to the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission in exactly four hours," Raymond said, checking his watch. "Unless... someone with your administrative credentials inputs a manual override code to verify the transfer of assets to Marissa Keane."
I stared at him in stunned silence. My father thought he had destroyed Nathan’s legacy, but Nathan had engineered his ultimate revenge from the grave.

"The catch," I guessed, "is that I need to be at a terminal inside the corporate mainframe to authorize it."
"And your father’s security team has locked down the entire building," Raymond replied. "You're going to need help breaking back in."
