Chapter 32 - The Architect of Shadows

The name Arthur Sterling meant nothing to me, but the sheer terror in Raymond’s eyes told me everything I needed to know.

"Who is he, Raymond?" I asked, pulling up a chair opposite him.

Raymond took a trembling breath. "He wasn't just your grandfather’s partner, Adrian. He was the architect of the Whitmore empire. Your grandfather was the face, the ruthless businessman who shook hands and bought off politicians. But Sterling... Sterling was the ghost in the machine. He designed the offshore networks, the shell companies, and the blackmail protocols that kept the family in power for fifty years."

"You said he died," Marissa interjected, pouring Raymond a glass of water from the carafe on my desk.

"That's what the official police report said," Raymond replied, taking a slow sip. "The car went off a cliff in Big Sur. Your grandfather survived; Sterling’s body was burned beyond recognition. But this morning, a man called my private, unlisted cell phone and recited a cipher code only Sterling and your grandfather knew."

"What did he want?" I asked, feeling a cold knot form in my stomach.

Raymond looked at me, his eyes dark with dread. "He wants the master key to Project Lazarus."

"We just found references to Lazarus in the old ledgers," I said, spinning the monitor around so Raymond could see the transaction history. "Five million dollars moved three days ago. What exactly is this project?"

Raymond shook his head slowly. "I don't know the specifics. Your grandfather kept it entirely off the books, even from me. But I know its purpose. Project Lazarus wasn't a real estate venture or a slush fund. It was an insurance policy. A failsafe designed to completely annihilate the Whitmore legacy—and everyone attached to it—if the company ever fell into the hands of someone trying to dismantle the empire."

Marissa grabbed my arm, her grip tight. "Adrian... you dismantled the empire."

May you like

"And Sterling has been waiting in the shadows for a quarter of a century to execute the failsafe," I finished the thought, my mind racing. "But he can't do it without the master key. Where is it?"

"I don't know," Raymond admitted, leaning heavily on his cane. "But if Sterling is alive, he won't stop until he finds it. And he won't hesitate to burn this foundation, this family, and this city to the ground to get it."
