Chapter 28 - The Second Secret

I stared at the young woman on my porch, the rain hissing against the stone steps behind her. "Claire?" I repeated, my mind racing through family trees and hidden records that Raymond and I had spent months unearthing. "There are no other surviving Whitmores. My aunt Eleanor died in Zurich, and my father is serving time upstate."

"Not Eleanor," Claire said, her teeth chattering as she stepped uninvited past me into the warm foyer, leaving a trail of wet footprints on the hardwood floor. "My father was Julian Whitmore. Your grandfather's youngest brother. The one they claimed died of scarlet fever in the nineteen-sixties."

Marissa walked out from the kitchen hallway, stopping short when she saw the stranger standing in our foyer. She immediately grabbed a dry towel from the hall closet and handed it to the shivering girl without hesitation.

"Here," Marissa said gently, wrapping the towel around Claire’s shoulders. "Let's get you into the kitchen by the fire before you catch pneumonia. Then you can tell us everything."

Sitting at the large oak dining table with a steaming mug of hot tea between her hands, Claire slowly stopped shaking. She opened the battered leather notebook she had been clutching and slid it across the table. Inside were photographs, birth certificates, and notarized letters dating back fifty years.

"My father didn't die of scarlet fever," Claire explained softly, her eyes fixed on the steam rising from her mug. "Your grandfather paid him off to disappear after Julian threatened to expose how they embezzled funds from the family’s original textile mills to build the construction empire. He lived in Canada under an assumed name until he passed away last month."

I flipped through the documents, my hands steady, though my heart pounded against my ribs. Every signature was authentic. Every date matched historical records we had previously thought lost.

"Why come here now, Claire?" I asked, looking straight into her eyes. "If your father wanted nothing to do with the Whitmores, why dredge this up?"

Claire looked up, her expression a mix of grief and fierce determination. "Because my father spent his whole life running from this family. But before he died, he told me the truth: the Whitmore empire wasn't built on business genius. It was built on stolen land and ruined lives. And he told me that if I ever wanted justice, I needed to give these documents to the only man in the family who had the courage to burn it all down."
