Chapter 11 - The Ashes of the Compound

The armored black SUVs tore through the gates of the Valente estate just as the first morning light cut through the Chicago smog. Behind us, sirens wailed in a synchronized chorus that signaled the complete dismantling of an empire.

Roman sat in the passenger seat of our vehicle, pressing a sterile gauze pad against his shoulder where a stray bullet had grazed him during the breakout. His face was a mask of cold, calculating fury.

“They think they’re cornered in the master vault,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register as he loaded a fresh magazine into his sidearm. “They think the steel doors will protect them from the fallout. They don't realize I built those vaults. I hold every master key, every digital override, and every exit strategy.”

I held Amara tightly against my chest in the back seat, watching the massive iron gates of the compound loom closer. “Roman, what happens when we get inside? Dante and Elena won’t go down quietly.”

“Quiet was never an option,” Roman replied, turning his head slightly to meet my eyes. His expression softened just a fraction, a stark contrast to the brutal underworld boss he truly was. “Once this is over, you and Amara walk away with a clean slate. New identities, untraceable bank accounts, and absolute safety. You earned that today.”

The SUVs slammed to a halt in the central courtyard. Heavy boots hit the pavement as Roman’s loyal elite guards fanned out, securing the perimeter with military precision.
