Chapter 8 - The Tunnel Escape

The heavy supply cabinet slid aside with a loud metallic screech as Roman threw his weight against it, revealing a dark, damp concrete shaft dropping into the shadows below.

“Go! Now!” Roman ordered, firing two more shots through the shattered glass partition to keep Dante’s men pinned down.

I didn't hesitate anymore. I grabbed Amara, hoisted her small frame over the edge of the shaft, and dropped down into the cold darkness just as a hail of bullets chewed up the wood where we had been standing a second before.

“Mom, I'm scared!” Amara cried out in the dark.

“Hold onto my neck and don't look back,” I whispered fiercely, gripping the brass keys Roman had given me.

We scrambled through the narrow concrete pipe, the sound of muffled gunfire and shouting echoing behind us like thunder inside a cave. Water dripped from the ceiling, soaking through my clothes, but adrenaline kept us moving. Every second felt like a lifetime as we crawled blindly through the subterranean maze of the Valente estate.

After what felt like miles, a faint gleam of gray daylight appeared ahead.

The drainage grate.

I threw my weight against the rusted iron bars. With a sharp wrench of the brass key in the rusted padlock, the grate popped open, spilling us out into the tall weeds just beyond the estate’s security fence.

We had made it out. But the real nightmare was only just beginning.
