Chapter 4 - The Confession That Wasn't

Elena didn't even look at Vivian groveling on the floor. Her gaze locked directly onto her husband, cold and calculating.

“Vivian claims you handed her the purse with the inhaler removed,” Roman said, his breathing still shallow, assisted by a portable tank beside the bed.

“Vivian is a desperate gold-digger trying to deflect attention from an assassination attempt she likely botched,” Elena replied smoothly, walking over to the bedside table and adjusting her diamond bracelet. “Honestly, Roman, your taste in women has always been your greatest vulnerability. You think I would risk my position, my family name, and our alliance with the Morenos to suffocate you in a hallway?”

“The medical schedule was altered using your override code, Elena,” Roman said, holding up a tablet handed to him by Dr. Vance.

Elena didn't blink. “Anyone in this compound can hack a digital log if they have access to the master terminal. And who manages the master terminal logs on the second floor? The domestic staff. Specifically, the new head maid.”

My blood ran cold.

From my position near the doorway, still holding the silver tray, I felt every eye in the room snap onto me.

“Clara,” Elena whispered, turning her head slowly to look at me. A predatory smile touched her lips. “Step forward.”

I couldn't move. My feet felt glued to the floor. Amara squeezed my hand so hard her knuckles turned white.

“She was standing right there when Roman collapsed,” Elena continued, building her narrative with terrifying precision. “And look at what she's hiding in her apron pocket.”

Dante was already moving. Before I could blink, his hand shot out, ripping the folded medical form straight out of my apron pocket. He unfolded it smoothly, his eyes scanning the handwritten notes: 11:55 A.M. Expected respiratory event: 12:00 P.M.

“Well, well,” Dante murmured, holding the paper up for Roman to see. “It seems our humble maid has quite the literary collection.”

“I didn't write that!” I stammered, my voice cracking with panic. “I found it on the floor right after Vivian dropped her purse! I didn't even touch the dispensary terminals!”

“Everyone says that before they face the wall,” Dante said flatly, pulling a silenced pistol from his shoulder holster with terrifying casualness.
