Chapter 20 - The New Empire and the Final Secret

The standoff lasted only a fraction of a second, but it felt like an eternity.
Moretti started to squeeze his trigger, but Roman moved with lightning speed. Two sharp cracks echoed through the confined cabin.
Moretti dropped his weapon, staggered backward against the bar, and collapsed onto the carpet, lifeless.
Silence descended upon the cabin, broken only by the hiss of the jet engines and Amara’s quiet sobs.
Roman dropped his gun into his holster, walking slowly down the aisle toward us. He knelt down on one knee, looking directly into my terrified, tear-stained face.
“You lied to us,” I whispered, my voice shaking with a mixture of rage and fear. “You used us.”

“The syndicate is gone, Clara,” Roman said softly. “I liquidated every asset this morning. I’m walking away too. No bosses. No families. No wars.”
He stood up, looking down at Amara, who wiped her eyes and looked up at him with a mix of suspicion and lingering awe.
“And as for your chief investigator,” Roman added with a faint, rare smile, “she’s got a bright future ahead of her—somewhere far away from Chicago.”

He turned and walked toward the open cockpit door, stepping out onto the tarmac just as federal sirens began wail in the distance, signaling the dawn of a completely new world.
I looked down at the passports in my hands, then pulled Amara close against my chest. The game was over, the pawns had escaped the board, and for the first time in our lives, the future belonged entirely to us.
