Chapter 16 - The Crossroads

“And what about you, Mr. Valente?” I asked softly. “What happens to the empire now?”

“The empire gets restructured,” Roman replied, turning his gaze toward the open front doors where the sun was now shining brightly over the Chicago skyline. “No more syndicates built on blood and paranoia. From here on out, we transition strictly into legitimate logistics and real estate. The old ways die with Dante and Elena.”

He looked back at us, his expression turning solemn and sincere. “A car is waiting outside the gates. It will take you to O'Hare International. Private jet is fueled and ready.”

I gripped Amara's hand tightly. We had won. The nightmare was over.

We walked out of the massive oak doors of the Valente estate for the very last time, leaving the dark underworld behind us like a bad dream.

As the car drove us away toward the airport, I looked out the tinted window, watching the grand gates of the compound fade into the distance. Amara leaned her head against my shoulder, already falling asleep from the sheer exhaustion of the day.

I thought we were finally safe. I thought the story was over.

I was dangerously wrong.
