Chapter 15 - The Cleanup

Within ten minutes, federal agents and Roman’s elite cleanup crew swarmed the vault. Dante and Elena were hauled away in heavy titanium zip-ties, destined for a federal black site where syndicate trials were handled outside public view.
The air in the estate felt lighter, as if a toxic fog that had hung over the building for years had finally been blown away by a storm.
I stood in the grand foyer, holding Amara's hand. The silver tea tray still sat on a side table nearby, looking like a relic from an entirely different lifetime.
Roman walked down the grand staircase, his shoulder bandaged, wearing a fresh dark coat. He stopped a few feet away from us, looking down at Amara with an expression of profound respect.
“You saved my life back there, young lady,” Roman said quietly. “Not just in the hallway with the inhaler, but just now in the vault.”
Amara crossed her arms, looking up at him with a serious expression. “People who throw paperweights at kids deserve what they get. My mom taught me to aim for the target.”
Roman let out a low chuckle, a genuine smile warming his scarred features. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet pouch, holding it out toward me.
“What is this?” I asked, hesitating.

“Your freedom,” Roman said simply. “And your startup capital. Inside is enough cash and legal documentation to establish a completely new life anywhere in the world—Europe, the Pacific, wherever you choose. Your contracts with the Valente estate are terminated effective immediately.”
I looked at the pouch, then up into Roman’s eyes. After thirteen months of living in fear, of watching my back, of carrying silver trays for monsters, the weight finally lifted off my shoulders.
