Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate (The Unexpected Ending)

The trap had flipped completely.

By utilizing the very tool that had been used to humiliate her—social media—Claire had brought the full weight of the federal government down on Elena Vance within ten minutes. Helicopters roared over Harbor City, searchlights illuminating the Grand Hotel. Elena’s men in the basement of Gabriel’s building, realizing they were being watched by millions of people online, dropped their weapons and fled into the night, leaving Marco untouched.

The sirens outside were deafening as the FBI raided the Grand Hotel, dragging Elena Vance out in handcuffs in front of dozens of news cameras.

An hour later, the lockdown was lifted. The penthouse was filled with federal agents, but Gabriel and Claire stood on the balcony, watching the flashing lights below.

Gabriel turned to Claire, a profound sense of awe in his eyes. He reached out, touching her face. "You didn't just save my life, Claire. You saved my legacy. You ended a thirty-year family war without firing a single shot."

Claire smiled, leaning into his touch. "I told you, Gabriel. Fear isn't the only way to solve a problem. Sometimes, you just need to let people see the truth."

Suddenly, Viktor stepped onto the balcony, looking unusually pale. He held a legal document in his hand.

"Boss... Mrs. Moretti... you need to see this," Viktor stammered. "We just intercepted the final text message sent from Elena Vance's phone before she was arrested. It wasn't sent to Chicago. It was sent to a local lawyer."

Gabriel took the document, his eyes scanning the lines. His jaw dropped.

The document was a deed of ownership.

Bellanova’s Italian Kitchen—the restaurant where Claire had worked for years, the place where she had met Gabriel, the place where she had been drenched in Coke—had never belonged to Marco or any independent owner.

It had been bought twenty years ago under a shell corporation owned by Claire’s late mother.

Claire wasn't just a poor waitress working to pay off medical debts. Her mother had been the silent financial partner of the entire Moretti empire before Gabriel took over, hiding her immense wealth to protect Claire from the dangerous underworld. The medical debts had been a fabricated paper trail created by her mother’s lawyers to keep Claire hidden in plain sight until she was old enough to inherit the entire Harbor City waterfront.

Claire was, by blood and by law, the ultimate landlord of the very empire Gabriel commanded.

Gabriel stared at his wife, completely stunned. "Claire... you... you own the land under my feet."

Claire looked at the document, then looked up at her husband, a brilliant, knowing smile breaking across her face.

"Well," Claire laughed, linking her arm through his as they looked out over the glittering city they now both ruled. "I guess you really should have left a better review."
