Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Countermove

The twist was not that Madison had been broken; it was that she had been a pawn in a much larger, bloodier game.

Inside Room 214 of the Airport Airport Inn, Madison was packing a suitcase with trembling hands. Her face was swollen from crying. Evan was pacing the floor, a glass of cheap hotel whiskey in his hand.

"We have to leave the country," Evan panicked. "Moretti is going to kill us. You heard him!"

"Shut up, Evan!" Madison screamed. "The Falcones promised us five million dollars if we got Moretti to react publicly! We did it! The stream went viral, his name is everywhere, and the feds are already looking into his corporate ties because of the Apex shutdown!"

The door to the hotel room didn't click open; it exploded inward.

The wood shattered as Viktor’s massive frame kicked the door off its hinges. Before Evan could even scream, two Moretti operatives threw him to the floor, zip-tying his hands behind his back.

Madison backed into the corner, clutching a designer handbag to her chest like a shield. "No! Please! The wife said we could go!"

From the hallway, a figure walked in. But it wasn't Gabriel.

It was Claire.

She was no longer wearing the oversized hoodie or the waitress apron. She wore a tailored, midnight-blue silk suit that hugged her curves with an undeniable aura of power. Her dark hair was styled perfectly, and her eyes, usually filled with warmth and empathy, were as cold as winter frost.

Gabriel walked in behind her, standing half a step back—not as her controller, but as her protector. Tonight, the stage belonged to her.

Claire walked over to Madison, looking down at the terrified girl. She reached down, took the designer handbag from Madison’s grip, and tossed it to Viktor.

"You thought I was vulnerable because I am quiet," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register that sounded chillingly like her husband’s. "You thought because my body doesn't look like the girls on your feed, I don't know how to carry weight. But I have carried the weight of survival my entire life, Madison."

Claire leaned down, putting her face inches from Madison's. "I knew about the Falcones three months ago. My husband tells me everything. I knew they were looking for a useful idiot to test our security at Bellanova's. I chose to keep working there specifically to see who they would send."

Madison’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. The entire event—the Coke, the livestream, the humiliation—hadn't been Madison's choice. She had been walked directly into a trap designed by the very woman she thought she was bullying.

"You... you let me do that to you?" Madison whispered.

"I needed the entire world to see how cruel your handlers are," Claire said, standing up straight and smoothing her jacket. "And I needed a reason for my husband to legally and financially liquidate every single asset the Falcones own in this city without starting a street war. Tonight, you gave us the public justification we needed. The city council is already signing over the shipping berths to Moretti Holdings to 'protect public safety' from outside syndicates."

Gabriel stepped forward, a proud, lethal smile gracing his lips. He wrapped an arm around Claire’s waist.

"My wife is a very clever woman, Miss Cole," Gabriel said. "She handles the diplomacy. I handle the trash."

Gabriel looked at Viktor. "Deliver them to the FBI. Give them the encrypted drive containing the Falcone transaction records we found on Miss Cole’s phone. Let the government do the cleaning for us."

As Madison and Evan were dragged out of the room, sobbing and begging for a mercy that had already been exhausted, Claire turned to Gabriel. The coldness in her eyes melted away, replaced by the familiar warmth that had captured his heart in a dark restaurant during a storm.

"Are you hungry?" Claire asked, a small smile playing on her lips. "I know a great Italian place. The service is a bit slow, but the dessert is worth it."

Gabriel laughed—a rare, genuine sound that echoed through the empty hotel hallway. He kissed her deeply, holding her close against the rainy night.

"Lead the way, Mrs. Moretti," he whispered. "Lead the way."
