Chapter 4 - The Scent of Blood and Soda

Evan Price finally found his voice, though it sounded weak and pathetic. "You can't just threaten us. We have rights. This is a public place. There are cameras—"

"The cameras in this restaurant have just experienced a sudden, tragic technical malfunction," Gabriel said, not even looking at him. "And as for your rights... you lost them the moment you clapped when my wife was assaulted."

Gabriel turned his back on them, walking toward the kitchen doors. "Bring them," he ordered Viktor.

"Wait! Please!" Madison screamed as Viktor and another suit-clad man grabbed her and Evan by the arms, lifting them effortlessly from their chairs. The restaurant patrons looked away, suddenly very interested in their salads and steaks. Nobody was going to intervene.

They were dragged through the kitchen doors, into the harsh, fluorescent-lit back hallway where the smell of bleach and old grease replaced the luxury of the dining room.

Claire was standing there, wrapped in a clean, oversized black hoodie that belonged to one of the line cooks. Her hair was damp, towel-dried, but her expression was steady.

When Madison saw Claire, she threw herself to her knees, breaking free of Viktor’s grip only because Viktor allowed it.

"I'm sorry! I am so sorry!" Madison sobbed, her designer dress scraping against the dirty kitchen floor tiles. "Please, tell him to stop! I'll give you money, I'll delete my accounts, I'll do a public apology video! Just don't let him hurt us!"

Claire looked down at the girl who had been mocking her size and her speed just twenty minutes prior. There was no triumph in Claire’s eyes. Only a deep, profound sadness.

"You aren't sorry you did it," Claire said softly. "You're just sorry you got caught by someone who can fight back."

Gabriel walked up behind Claire, placing a heavy, protective hand on her shoulder. The tension in his jaw relaxed slightly at her touch, but his eyes remained lethal as he looked down at Madison.

"Claire," Gabriel said. "The Apex contract is gone. Tomorrow, the bank will foreclose on Miss Cole’s boutique downtown due to a sudden re-evaluation of her credit risk. Mr. Price’s family construction firm will find its city permits revoked by sunrise. They are ruined. Is this enough, or do you want more?"

Evan looked up, his face pale with horror. "Our family business? You can't do that! That's three generations of work!"

"You should have thought about your grandfather's legacy before you applauded a hate crime," Gabriel said coldly.

Madison looked at Claire, pleading with her eyes. "Please... you're a woman... you know what it’s like... please have mercy."

Claire looked at Gabriel. "Let them go."

Gabriel frowned. "Claire—"

"Let them go, Gabriel," she repeated, her voice stronger this time. "They’ve lost everything that gave them their cruelty—their money, their status, their digital audience. Without those things, they are nothing anyway. Don't stain your hands for them. You promised me."

Gabriel stared at his wife for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the kitchen hallway was thick enough to choke on. Finally, Gabriel closed his eyes and took a breath.

"Viktor," Gabriel commanded. "Throw them out into the street. If I see either of their faces in Harbor City after tomorrow, the promise to my wife expires."
