Chapter 2 - The Apex of Ruin

The atmosphere inside Bellanova’s began to shift long before Gabriel arrived.
It started with the arrival of three large, black SUVs that parked directly on the sidewalk, blocking the restaurant’s main entrance. The host, a young college student named Leo, stepped forward to tell them they couldn't park there, but the words died in his throat when the doors opened.
Six men in identical, impeccably tailored charcoal suits stepped out. They didn't look like thugs; they looked like corporate executives who moonlighted as executioners. They took positions at the doors, their hands folded neatly in front of them.
Then, the rear door of the center Maybach opened.
Gabriel Moretti stepped into the rain. He didn't carry an umbrella. The drops seemed to avoid him out of sheer respect. He adjusted the cuffs of his shirt, his silver family pin—the one he had hidden on his wedding day—now gleaming prominently on his lapel.
Inside, Madison was just finishing a tirade about the slow service when the restaurant’s front doors opened.
The chatter in the dining room ceased instantly. The older couple who had been staring in disbelief earlier recognized Gabriel immediately; the husband, a retired judge, went pale and dropped his fork.
Gabriel didn't look at anyone. He walked with a slow, measured stride straight toward table four. Behind him walked Arthur Pendelton, the CEO of the Apex Group—the very man Madison and Evan had been desperate to impress for their million-dollar marketing contract. Pendelton looked as though he were walking toward a firing squad.
Madison, seeing Arthur Pendelton, immediately stood up, her face lighting up with a brilliant, practiced smile.
"Mr. Pendelton! We were expecting you at the Harbor Club! We are so honored that you decided to join us here instead—"
She reached out a hand, but Pendelton didn't take it. In fact, he stepped back, ensuring there was at least three feet of distance between himself and Madison, his eyes darting nervously to the man standing next to him.
Madison’s smile faltered. She looked at Gabriel. "Oh, are you with the Apex Group too? I don't think we’ve met. I'm Madison—"
Gabriel didn't answer. He turned his gaze to the floor.
There, drying into a sticky, dark brown stain on the polished hardwood, was the remnants of the Coke. A single, half-melted ice cube remained.
Gabriel looked at the stain, then looked up at Madison. His expression was entirely blank, which was far more terrifying than rage.
"Is this where it happened?" Gabriel asked softly.
Evan, trying to play the protective, alpha-male boyfriend, stood up, adjusting his blazer. "Look, man, I don't know who you are, but we're in the middle of a private business discussion with Mr. Pendelton. Whatever your issue is, take it up with management."
Gabriel didn't even turn his head to look at Evan. He merely raised a single finger.
Viktor stepped forward, grabbed Evan by the shoulder, and applied a fraction of pressure. Evan’s knees buckled instantly, and he collapsed back into his chair with a sharp gasp of pain, his face turning bright red.

"Evan!" Madison gasped, her phone still recording. "What are you doing? I am livestreaming this! Hundreds of thousands of people are watching you assault my boyfriend!"
"Let them watch," Gabriel said. He took a step closer to her, his presence suffocating the air around the table. "In fact, zoom in. I want them to see the face of the man who is about to dismantle your life."
