Chapter 9 - The Waitress’s Gambit

The electronic lock on the panic room door clicked.
"Gabriel, what are you doing?" Claire cried out as Gabriel began to override the system from the internal console.
"I have to go down there and terminate the signal," Gabriel said, checking the clip of his matte-black pistol. "If I stay here, we die in the rubble. If I go, Viktor can get you out through the ventilation extraction shaft."
"No," Claire said, grabbing his arm. "You go down there, and Elena’s snipers will pick you off before you reach the lobby. Look at the monitors—they have every exit covered. They are waiting for you to behave like a mafia boss. They expect you to fight."
"Then what do you suggest, Claire? We sit here and wait to be buried?"
Claire looked at her own reflection in the dark security screen. She was plus-size, she was a waitress, she was the woman the high-society elites laughed at. But she was also a woman who had spent her entire life observing people, learning their habits, and finding their weak spots while they busy judging her exterior.
"Elena wants to see your reaction because she thinks you control everything," Claire said, a dangerous spark igniting in her eyes. "She doesn't expect me to act. She thinks I'm just the soft, helpless wife."
Claire reached into her purse, which she had dragged into the room, and pulled out her secondary phone—the old, unencrypted one she used for restaurant business. She logged into an account that had been dormant since the night of the incident: Madison Cole’s hijacked livestream channel.
Thanks to Gabriel’s tech team, Claire now had full access to Madison’s millions of followers, who were still buzzing about the "Mafia Waitress" drama.
Claire turned on the camera.
"Hello, everyone," Claire said, her voice smooth, broadcasting live to three million people within thirty seconds. The notification flared across the internet: Madison Cole is LIVE.
"My name is Claire Moretti," she said into the lens, showing the concrete walls of the panic room. "Right now, Elena Vance, a wanted federal fugitive, is attempting to detonate a civilian apartment building in downtown Harbor City. If the lights go out, if this stream cuts, you know exactly who did it."
Within seconds, the comments exploded into a frenzy. The news spread like wildfire. Media outlets across the country picked up the stream.
Across the street, inside the Grand Hotel, Elena Vance watched the livestream on her tablet. Her face turned from arrogant triumph to absolute panic. She wasn't just fighting Gabriel in the dark anymore; she was being exposed to the entire world in real-time by a woman she had dismissed as nothing.

"Turn it off! Cut their power!" Elena screamed at her tech specialist.
"I can't, Matriarch! She's broadcasting via satellite backup! The FBI is already tracking the signal source... they're tracing it straight to our hotel room!"
