Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

Two hours later, the penthouse apartment overlooking the harbor was quiet. Claire had taken a long, hot shower, scrubbing the last remnants of the sticky syrup from her skin. She wore a soft grey robe and sat on the plush sofa, a cup of chamomile tea between her hands.
Gabriel entered the room, having changed out of his suit into a simple black t-shirt. He sat beside her, pulling her into his side. Claire didn't resist. She leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady, calming beat of his heart.
"You're angry with me," she murmured.
"I am angry that you were hurt," Gabriel said, his voice thick with repressed emotion. "I am angry that I wasn't there to stop it before it landed on you."
"You came," she said. "That's what matters."
"It's not enough," Gabriel whispered, kissing the top of her damp hair. "The world is getting bolder, Claire. They look at you and they think you are a weakness I possess. They think because I love a woman who is gentle, it means I have grown soft."
Claire looked up at him. "Is that what this was? You think someone planned this?"
Gabriel’s eyes darkened. "Madison Cole is a fool, but she isn't suicidal. Her father’s small-time logistics company was recently bought out by a larger conglomerate based out of Chicago. The Falcone syndicate."
Claire stiffened. The Falcones were Gabriel’s fiercest rivals, a brutal family that had been trying to muscle into Harbor City’s shipping ports for a decade.
"You think they sent her?"
"I think they knew she was an unstable, arrogant brat who frequented Bellanova’s," Gabriel said, his jaw clenching. "I think they dropped a hint in her ear that a 'big viral stunt' at that specific restaurant would guarantee her the Apex marketing contract. They wanted to see how I would react. They wanted to see if I would break my promise to you and cause a scene that would bring the feds down on us."
Claire let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "A trap."
"Yes," Gabriel said, his hand tightening around her waist. "And by showing mercy, you actually saved us from a federal investigation. If Viktor had broken Evan’s legs in that dining room, the FBI would have had the leverage they needed to raid our properties tomorrow morning. You think your mercy is a weakness, Claire. But tonight, it was our shield."
Suddenly, Gabriel’s phone vibrated on the coffee table.
He picked it up. It was an encrypted message from Viktor. Gabriel swiped it open, and as he read the text, his face went completely rigid.
Claire watched him, her heart sinking. "Gabriel? What is it?"
Gabriel looked at her, a strange, terrifying expression in his eyes—a mixture of cold fury and dark satisfaction.
"Madison Cole and Evan Price didn't go home," Gabriel said slowly. "They went straight to a hotel near the airport. Viktor kept a tail on them. Ten minutes ago, a car pulled up to meet them."
May you like
"Who?" Claire whispered.
"The driver was identified as Salvatore Falcone’s youngest son," Gabriel said, standing up. "They weren't just clout-chasers, Claire. They were selling information on your schedule, your routines, and your security detail. They were setting you up for something much worse than a glass of Coke."
