Chapter 7 - The Shadows Stir in Harbor City

The fall of the Falcone syndicate’s young heir was supposed to bring peace, but in the underworld of Harbor City, a vacuum only invites hungrier predators.
Inside the penthouse, the early morning light did little to warm the cold dread settling over Gabriel Moretti. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, his phone pressed to his ear. On the floor layout behind him, a map of the Harbor City docks was covered in red markers.
"What do you mean, the FBI transport was intercepted?" Gabriel’s voice was lower than usual, a sign that his fury had crossed into a calculated, lethal territory.
On the other end, Viktor’s breathing was heavy, the sound of rain and sirens wailing in the background. "It wasn't a rescue op, Boss. It was a clean-up. Someone blew the transport van on the interstate. Madison Cole and Evan Price... they didn't make it to the federal holding cells. And the encrypted drive we gave them? It's gone."
Gabriel’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. Madison and Evan were supposed to be the bait to legally dismantle the Falcones. Now, they were dead ends, silenced by someone with deep connections inside the local authorities.
"Who did it, Viktor?"
"We found a signature left on the wreckage, Boss. A single, white orchid."
Gabriel’s breath hitched. It wasn't the Falcones. The Falcones were brutal, but they were loud and sloppy. The white orchid belonged to someone far more terrifying: The Matriarch, Elena Vance. She was Gabriel’s own aunt, a woman who had vanished ten years ago after a failed coup within the Moretti family. She had been hiding in the shadows of Chicago, waiting for Gabriel to show a single vulnerability.
And through Madison’s viral livestream, Elena had finally found it.
Claire.
Just then, the bedroom door opened. Claire stepped out, wearing a simple cream sweater, holding two cups of espresso. She noticed the tension in Gabriel's shoulders instantly. "Gabriel? What happened?"
Before Gabriel could lie to protect her peace, his phone buzzed with an incoming video call from an unknown, encrypted number. He looked at Claire, then slowly pressed answer and put it on speaker.
The screen flickered to life, revealing a luxurious, dimly lit study. Sitting in a high-backed leather chair was an elegant, silver-haired woman drinking tea.
"Hello, Gabriel," Elena Vance smiled, her voice dripping with venomous sweetness. "I must thank your lovely wife. If she hadn't made such a public spectacle of those internet children, I wouldn't have known where to look for your heart. She really is as... substantial as the media says."

Gabriel stepped between the phone and Claire, his voice dropping to a deathly whisper. "If you breathe in her direction, Elena, I will burn Chicago to the ground with you in it."
"Oh, I'm not in Chicago, nephew," Elena chuckled, looking directly into the camera. "Look out your window. Top floor of the Grand Hotel across the street. I can see your beautiful wife from here. Let's see how fast she can run."
