CHAPTER 3 — The Woman Everyone Hunted

mansion erupted into chaos.
Guests ran toward the front doors.
Security guards rushed through every hallway.
Melissa knelt beside Samuel.
"Who did this?"
Samuel grimaced through the pain.
"They weren't trying to kill me..."
"They wanted the evidence."
Upstairs, Andrew searched every room.
"Eleanor!"
No answer.
Only the sound of rain beginning again outside.
Meanwhile...
Eleanor stumbled into an abandoned greenhouse behind the estate, clutching Richard's letter.
Her breathing was ragged.
She hadn't run because she was guilty.
She had run because she remembered something Richard had told her just hours before he died.
"If anything happens during the reading..."
"...go to the greenhouse."
"...under the old oak bench."
With trembling hands, she lifted the rusted wooden bench.
Beneath it was a small iron box.
Inside...
A stack of sealed documents.
A flash drive.
And a baby bracelet from thirty years ago.
Engraved on the tiny silver tag were the words:
MICHAEL WHITMORE.
Her hands shook violently.
She plugged the flash drive into the old laptop Richard had hidden there.
One video file appeared.
She pressed play.
Richard filled the screen.
His face looked thinner than anyone remembered.
"If you're watching this, Eleanor..."
"...they've already started hunting you."
He swallowed hard.
"The truth is bigger than my will."
He held up a DNA report.
Then another.
Then a birth certificate.
"My children believed Michael died."
"But he didn't."
"He was taken."
"He survived."
"And for thirty years..."
"...he has been living under another name."
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"No..."
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"The child everyone believed was adopted..."
"...is actually my son."
"But that's not the worst part."
He slowly placed one final photograph in front of the camera.
It showed a smiling teenage boy standing beside the Whitmore family at Christmas.
Someone they all knew.
Someone they all trusted.
Richard whispered one final sentence before the recording ended.
"The person trying hardest to steal my company... is actually Michael himself."
Outside the greenhouse...
A flashlight beam swept across the window.
Then another.
Voices echoed through the darkness.
"She's in here."
"Don't let her escape."
Eleanor clutched the evidence to her chest.
She had inherited a fortune.
May you like
But what Richard had truly left her...
Was a war that had been waiting thirty years to begin.
