CHAPTER 4 — The Son Who Came Back as the Enemy

Eleanor backed away from the greenhouse window.

The flashlight beams moved closer.

One voice whispered,

“She has the files.”

Another answered,

“Then take them before the police arrive.”

Eleanor’s hands tightened around Richard’s iron box.

For thirty years, the Whitmore family had treated her like furniture.

Now they were hunting her like a criminal.

The greenhouse door creaked open.

A tall man stepped inside.

Not Andrew.

Not Victor.

Not one of the guards.

It was Daniel Royce.

The quiet family accountant.

The man who had handled Whitmore Holdings’ books for twenty years.

Eleanor stared at him.

“Daniel?”

He smiled sadly.

“No, Eleanor.”

He reached into his coat and pulled out a silver baby bracelet.

The same kind as the one in Richard’s box.

“My real name is Michael Whitmore.”

Eleanor stopped breathing.

Daniel—Michael—stepped closer.

“I didn’t come back for money.”

“Then why?” Eleanor whispered.

May you like

His eyes hardened.

“To find out which one of them buried me alive.”
