CHAPTER 5 — The Family Turns on Itself

By sunrise, the police had sealed the mansion.
No one was allowed to leave.
Melissa screamed at detectives.
Andrew demanded lawyers.
Victor kept checking his phone with shaking hands.
Then Michael walked into the main hall beside Eleanor.
The entire family went silent.
Melissa’s face turned white.
Andrew whispered,
“That’s impossible.”
Michael placed the baby bracelet on the table.
“I remember the lake.”
“I remember someone covering my mouth.”
“I remember waking up in a car trunk.”
Victor suddenly looked away.
Eleanor noticed.
So did Michael.
The detective opened Richard’s hidden files.
Bank transfers.
Forged adoption records.
A private hospital bill.
And one name appeared again and again.
Victor Langley.
Melissa gasped.
Victor laughed nervously.
“This is insane.”
But Michael walked toward him.
“You weren’t old enough to plan it alone.”
Victor’s smile vanished.
“Who helped you?”
The room fell silent.
Then an elderly voice spoke from the doorway.
“I did.”
Everyone turned.
Richard’s sister, Margaret Whitmore, stood there in black.

Her cane tapped once against the marble floor.
“I saved this family from a scandal.”
