Chapter 1 - The Ghost from the PastThe linoleum floor of Central Hospital rushed up to meet Ethan Parker. At thirty-six, he was a titan of corporate finance, a ruthless strategist who engineered hostile takeovers with cold precision, yet the mere utterance of a single name had dismantled his composure in a fraction of a second.

Hannah Whitmore.

Twelve years. It had been twelve agonizingly long years since he had last heard that name. Twelve years since he stood on a rain-slicked Chicago street corner, packed his bags, and boarded a private jet, leaving behind a pregnant college sweetheart with a promise that money would solve everything. He had told her that a shared future of poverty would destroy them both. He had left a cashier's check on the kitchen counter—a sum large enough to buy a modest house—and never looked back.

"Mr. Parker! Sir, are you alright?"

His personal assistant, Julian, materialized out of nowhere, panic tightening his voice as he grabbed Ethan’s designer suit jacket to steady him.

Ethan didn't answer. He shoved Julian’s hands away with a violent shudder, his eyes locked on the small, shivering frame of the five-year-old girl still clinging to Dr. Reynolds’s coat.

Her eyes.

They weren't his. They were Hannah’s. The exact same piercing, defiant hazel that had looked at him on the day he walked out, telling him that success without a soul wasn't worth living. And that little girl—the one with the frayed pink coat and the untied Velcro sneaker—was his daughter. The daughter he never knew existed.

"Sir, your heart rate—you need to sit down," Julian urged, pulling out a handkerchief.

"Shut up," Ethan hissed, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of adrenaline, guilt, and sheer, unadulterated panic. He pushed himself up from the floor, ignoring the burning humiliation of having cracked in front of a public lobby. He looked back at the surgical board.

Whitmore, Hannah. Emergency Craniotomy. Critical.

The words burned into his retinas like hot branding irons. Without a word to Julian, Ethan broke into a dead sprint toward the emergency doors.
