Chapter 7 - The Long Night in the ICUThe hours ticked past like drops of lead.

Midnight came and went, replaced by the pale, sickly grey light of dawn creeping through the high windows of Central Hospital. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the streets outside slick and glistening under the streetlamps.
Ethan hadn't left the hallway once. He had refused coffee, refused to sit down, and refused to leave little Lily’s side. The little girl had eventually fallen asleep curled up on a hard plastic hospital chair, her small head resting against Ethan’s tailored wool coat, which he had wrapped around her like a blanket.
At 5:30 AM, the heavy doors of Trauma Room 3 finally swung open.
Dr. Reynolds walked out, looking exhausted, his mask dangling around his neck, dark circles carved deep beneath his eyes. He didn't look like a man who had just performed a miracle; he looked like a man who had fought a grueling war against death itself—and barely won.
Ethan gently lifted Lily so she wouldn't wake, standing up to face the surgeon.
"Doctor?" Ethan asked, his voice cracking for the first time.
Dr. Reynolds let out a long, shuddering breath, then allowed a weary, genuine smile to break across his face.
"She's stable, Mr. Parker," the surgeon said softly. "The swelling in her brain has subsided. The intracranial pressure is down to a safe level. She’s currently in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit, but... she’s going to make it. Her mother is a fighter."
Ethan closed his eyes, a wave of profound relief crashing over him so violently that he had to lean against the wall to keep his balance. For the first time in twelve years, the crushing weight in his chest felt slightly lighter.
"Can I see her?" Ethan whispered.
"One at a time, and only for a few minutes," Dr. Reynolds replied, patting Ethan’s shoulder. "She has a long road of physical and neurological recovery ahead of her, but the worst is behind us."
As Dr. Reynolds walked away, Julian rushed down the hallway, holding a sleek black tablet computer, his face flushed with triumph and adrenaline.
"Boss! Viktor delivered!" Julian panted, holding out the tablet. "We hacked into Vanguard’s primary server backups using an exploit Hannah herself left hidden in their financial archives. Ethan... it’s all there. The embezzlement, the offshore bribes, the internal memos proving Marcus Vance ordered the 'accident' on Hannah’s staircase."
Ethan took the tablet, his eyes scanning the decrypted documents flashing across the screen. Every single illegal transaction, every dirty secret, every nail for Vanguard’s corporate coffin was neatly organized in front of him.
"Good," Ethan said coldly, handing the tablet back. "Send copies to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Justice, and every major news outlet in the country. Schedule an emergency press conference for 9:00 AM sharp at Vanguard Global headquarters."

"Nine AM?" Julian blinked in shock. "That's when the merger signing ceremony was supposed to happen!"
"Exactly," Ethan said, a dangerous glint in his eye. "We aren't going to cancel the meeting, Julian. We're going to attend."
