Chapter 2 - The Secret Beneath the Skin

The silence that followed her confession wasn’t the quiet of a calm night; it was the suffocating stillness before a lightning strike.

Luca didn’t flinch. He didn’t step back. Instead, he closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a ferocity that could melt steel. The air in the kitchen grew hot, charged with the dangerous energy of a man who hated lies almost as much as he hated being kept in the dark.

"Try me," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Tell me who I'm supposed to kill, Elena."

Her breath hitched. She pressed her back against the cold marble counter, trapped between the sink and a mafia boss who looked ready to tear the city apart just to keep her safe.

"You don't understand," she choked out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "He isn't just some street thug. He’s... he’s connected to the board. To the syndicate. To the men you share tables with."

Luca’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "I don't give a damn if he sits at the right hand of the devil. In this city, my word is law. If someone laid a hand on you—anyone—they answer to me."

Before Elena could find the courage to speak the name that haunted her nightmares, the heavy mahogany door of the mansion's front entrance shuddered under a massive, thunderous blow.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

It wasn't a knock. It was a raid.

Marco burst back into the kitchen, his face pale, drawing his weapon from his holster. "Boss! We’ve been breached. They bypassed the perimeter gates. It's Viktor Vance's enforcers. And they’re demanding the girl."

Elena let out a sharp, horrified gasp. Her knees buckled.

Luca moved before she hit the floor. His strong arm caught her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, shielding her instinctively. He looked down at her pale, terrified face, and in that split second, the final barrier around his cold heart shattered entirely.

"Vance wants her?" Luca’s voice dropped into an icy, venomous register that made even Marco step back. "Tell my men to lock down the estate. Load every weapon. No one touches her. No one even looks at her."

He looked back down at Elena, his thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek—a tender gesture so out of character it felt otherworldly.

"You're safe," he promised, his eyes burning with a lethal fire. "Let them come."
