Chapter 5 - Wounds and WhiskeyThe storm outside raged on, mirroring the turbulence inside the Moretti mansion.

Downstairs, the cleanup was swift and absolute. Marco and his men scrubbed the marble clean, erasing every trace of Vance’s intrusion. Upstairs, in the dimly lit sanctuary of Luca’s private study, the air smelled of old leather, expensive bourbon, and lingering adrenaline.

Elena sat perched on the edge of a deep leather armchair, her knees pulled up to her chest.

Luca stood before her with a first-aid kit in hand. He knelt on one knee in front of her chair, moving with a careful, almost reverent gentleness that seemed impossible for a man who had nearly beaten a rival boss to death twenty minutes ago.

"Hold still," he murmured, dipping a cotton swab into antiseptic.

Elena winced as the alcohol touched the raw, purple bruises circling her wrist—the permanent signature of Viktor Vance's cruelty.

Luca’s jaw tightened, his thumb brushing the uninjured skin of her hand with feather-light precision. "Does it hurt?"

"Not anymore," she whispered, looking down at his dark, intense eyes. "Why are you doing this, Luca? You didn't have to start a war for a maid. You could have handed me over to Vance, settled your debts, and kept your empire intact."

Luca stopped cleaning her wound. He looked up, his gaze holding hers with a terrifying, absolute intensity.

"You think you're just a maid?" He let out a low, rough breath. "From the first night you walked into my kitchen, trying to hide your scars behind oversized sleeves, trying to make yourself invisible... you weren't invisible to me, Elena."

Her breath caught. "You noticed?"

"I notice everything," he replied softly. "That’s how I stayed alive. But with you... I didn't just notice. I cared. And the moment Vance laid a hand on you, my empire became secondary. You are the only thing in this city I actually give a damn about."

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. The confession hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.

"Vance isn't gone for good," she whispered, a tear escaping her eye. "His syndicate... they own half the politicians in the capital. If you keep me here, they’ll come back with an army."

Luca stood up slowly, towering over her, his eyes flashing with a dark, terrifying promise.

"Let them come," he said, walking over to his mahogany desk and picking up a heavy, gold-embossed ledger. He tossed it onto her lap. "Open it."

Elena hesitated, her trembling fingers flipping open the thick cover. Her eyes widened in utter disbelief.

It wasn't a ledger of accounts. It was a dossier. Viktor Vance’s entire criminal empire—laundered money, human trafficking rings, federal indictments—all compiled, verified, and ready to be leaked to the FBI and rival families.

"What is this?" she breathed.

"This," Luca smiled, a cold, predatory curve of his lips, "is how we destroy him completely. And tomorrow, we start hunting."
