Chapter 9 - Ashes and EmpiresThree months later, the Moretti estate looked entirely different.

The heavy iron gates no longer felt like a prison; they felt like a fortress protecting a home. The staff moved with easy smiles, and the dark, oppressive shadows that once haunted the hallways had been replaced by the quiet warmth of security and peace.
In the sunlit conservatory overlooking the sprawling gardens, Elena sat by the window, sketching architectural designs in a thick leather notebook. Her skin was clear, the purple bruises long gone, replaced by a radiant, healthy glow.
Footsteps echoed behind her—familiar, heavy, and sure.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested gently on her shoulder.
"You're working too hard," Luca murmured, his voice a low, soothing rumble against her ear.
"I'm not working, I'm designing," Elena smiled, leaning back into his embrace, breathing in the scent of rain, cedar, and expensive cologne that belonged entirely to him. "Your new library needs a complete overhaul. The current shelving is a crime against literature."
Luca chuckled, a deep, rich sound that he reserved only for her. "Consider the entire estate yours to renovate. Do whatever you want with it."
"Anything?" she teased, turning her head to look up at him.
"Everything," he replied, his dark eyes softening as he gazed down at her with an intensity that could still make her heart skip a beat.
The downfall of Viktor Vance had sent shockwaves through the criminal underworld. The syndicate, realizing Luca Moretti’s power was absolute and untouchable, had quietly ceded the eastern territories without firing another shot. Luca was no longer just a mafia boss ruling through fear; he was a king who had secured his crown, and more importantly, his queen.
"Marco called," Luca said, resting his hands securely on her hips. "The federal trial starts next week. Vance is looking at consecutive life sentences with no parole. He’ll never see the outside of a maximum-security cell."
Elena closed her eyes for a brief second, letting the final anchor of her past slip away into nothingness. She was finally free.
"Good," she whispered.
Luca turned her fully in his arms, his expression turning serious, though a spark of mischief danced in his dark eyes.
"There's one more thing," he said slowly.
Elena raised an eyebrow. "What is it? Did another rival family try to invade?"
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box. He didn't drop to one knee—Luca Moretti didn't kneel for anyone or anything in this world—but as he popped the lid open to reveal a dazzling, vintage diamond ring that caught the sunlight, his eyes held a vulnerability that was more powerful than any weapon.
"I’ve spent my entire life building an empire of shadows," Luca said, his voice dropping to a raw, honest whisper. "I thought power was the only safety. But the moment I found you washing dishes at three in the morning... I realized my empire meant nothing unless you were standing beside me to rule it."
Elena stared at the ring, her breath catching in her throat as tears of pure joy welled in her eyes.

"Luca..."
"Marry me, Elena," he said, the most feared man in the city laying his entire soul at her feet. "Be my wife. Stay in my house, in my heart, forever."
