Chapter 10 - THE PROMISE KEPTThe golden hour sun cast long, warm shadows across the sprawling gardens of the Vance family estate overlooking the bay.

It was a crisp Saturday afternoon in late October. The autumn air was sharp and clean, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and woodsmoke from the outdoor fire pit.

Laughter echoed across the manicured lawn as six-year-old Lily chased a golden retriever puppy in circles, her bright red jacket fluttering behind her like a banner of pure joy.

Ethan stood on the back veranda, leaning against the wooden railing with a cup of coffee in his hand. Beside him stood Lupita, who had become like a beloved grandmother to Lily, watching the girl play with a gentle, contented smile.

"You know," Lupita said softly, taking a sip of her tea, "Sarah would have been so proud of you, Ethan. You didn't just save the company. You saved her legacy."

Ethan turned his gaze from Lily to the horizon, where the sun was beginning its slow, brilliant descent into the ocean, painting the sky in vibrant strokes of purple, orange, and gold.

"I didn't do it alone, Lupita," Ethan said, placing a warm hand on her shoulder. "We did it together. Because Sarah knew who to trust."

A sudden gust of wind swept across the veranda, carrying with it a sweet, familiar scent of red roses—soft, fleeting, and unmistakable.

Ethan looked down at his pocket, where he still carried the worn, faded photograph of Sarah and Lupita. He pulled it out for a brief second, looking at Sarah’s smiling face one more time before sliding it safely back into his coat.

Lily ran up the wooden steps, panting happily and grabbing onto Ethan’s leg.

"Daddy! Look! A falling star!" she cried, pointing up at the early evening sky where a single, brilliant streak of light crossed the twilight heaven.

Ethan smiled, lifting Lily up into his arms and holding her tight against his chest.
