Chapter 4 - THE GHOST IN THE BASEMENTThe metal fire escape stairs vibrated violently under Ethan and Lupita’s boots as they descended three levels down into the subterranean belly of the Grand Regent.

The plush carpets and crystal chandeliers of the upper floors were gone, replaced by raw concrete walls, exposed industrial pipes, and the steady, rhythmic thrum of massive HVAC boilers. The air smelled of industrial bleach, hot oil, and ancient dust.
Ethan shoved open a heavy, unlabelled fire door, pulling Lupita into a dim, labyrinthine corridor filled with linen carts and stacked supply crates.
"Where does this lead?" Ethan asked, gasping for breath as he checked over his shoulder. The stairwell door above them creaked open. Heavy boots echoed down the concrete steps.
"The laundry and maintenance sector," Lupita whispered, clutching her side. "There’s an old subterranean railway tunnel underneath—built during the prohibition era to smuggle goods into the hotel. No cameras down there. It’s the only way out without crossing the main lobby."
"Move!" Ethan urged.
They ducked behind a row of industrial folding tables just as Victor and his two guards burst into the hallway.
"Split up!" Victor barked to his men. "Check the boiler rooms! He can’t have gone far—the kid has no idea how this maze works!"
As the footsteps receded toward the eastern wing, Ethan pulled Lupita out from hiding and hurried toward a heavy iron bulkhead door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
Lupita pulled a small, rusted master key from her apron pocket—a relic of her years as lead housekeeper—and jammed it into the archaic keylock. With a sharp click, the heavy latch gave way.
They slipped inside, pulling the heavy iron door shut just as a flashlight beam swept across the hallway outside.
The space they entered was pitch black. Ethan pulled out his smartphone, turning on the flashlight feature. The beam cut through the darkness, revealing a long, brick-lined tunnel stretching into the damp earth beneath the city. Rusted iron tracks ran down the center of the floor, disappearing into the shadows.
"Stay close to the wall," Lupita warned, leading the way. "This tunnel connects to the old subway spur. If we reach the end, we hit the disused station on 5th Avenue. We can call the police from there safely."
As they walked deeper into the damp subterranean passage, Ethan noticed something strange embedded in the brick wall to his left—a series of modern electrical cables spliced crudely into the ancient masonry, running parallel to the old railway tracks.
"Lupita, stop," Ethan said, shining his light closer to the wall.
The cables led to a small, heavy-duty metal junction box stamped with the logo of a private offshore data corporation—the exact same logo Sarah had bookmarked in her old laptop files.
Ethan pried the unsecured metal cover off the box with his pocketknife.
Inside wasn't just wiring. It was a secondary, hidden server rack humming quietly in the dark, blinking with rhythmic green data lights. A thick fiber-optic cable snaked upward through a core-drilled hole in the ceiling—directly toward the Grand Regent’s VIP penthouse suites above.
"It's a mirror server," Ethan whispered, horror dawning in his chest. "The hotel isn't just a front for laundering money. It’s a massive illegal wiretapping and data-harvesting operation targeting foreign investors, politicians, and corporate executives."
Lupita gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "My God... that’s why Sarah was followed. She didn't just find financial records. She found the surveillance archives of every powerful person blackmailed by Pendelton and his syndicate."
A sudden, sharp click echoed behind them in the tunnel.
Ethan spun around, raising his phone light.

Standing thirty feet away, blocking the entrance they had just used, was Arthur Pendelton.
And beside him stood a man Ethan had never seen before—a tall, silver-haired figure in an immaculate tuxedo, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at Ethan’s chest.
