Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONThe digital clock on the nightstand glowed 11:42 PM.

Ethan sat in the dark corner of Suite 904, a glass of amber whiskey untouched in his hand, watching the city lights smear against the rain-streaked window. Lily was sound asleep in the adjoining room, her breathing soft and even.

A faint, three-tap knock sounded at the service entry door—the discreet entrance used by housekeeping and room service carts.

Ethan was on his feet in a second. He slipped his hand into his coat pocket where he had tucked a heavy brass hotel paperweight, crept across the dark room, and cracked the heavy wooden door open just an inch.

Lupita stood in the dim hallway.

She wore a plain gray woolen sweater over her dark housekeeping uniform, her graying hair pulled back into a tight bun. Her eyes darted anxiously up and down the corridor before she looked directly into the crack of the door.

"Let me in, Mr. Vance," she whispered, her voice shaking. "Before the night shift security rounds the corner."

Ethan swung the door open and pulled her inside, immediately locking it behind her. He guided her to a velvet armchair by the window, pouring a cup of hot chamomile tea from the room service tray and pushing it toward her.

"Talk," Ethan said, keeping his tone level but urgent. "Arthur Pendelton just left here threatening my life, and you told me in the lobby that Sarah left that photo for a reason. Start explaining, Lupita. Now."

Lupita wrapped her calloused hands around the warm ceramic mug, staring into the dark liquid as if searching for memories she had spent years trying to bury.

"Sarah saved my life," Lupita began softly, her voice barely audible above the hum of the air conditioner. "Four years ago, I made a terrible mistake. I was deep in debt—loan sharks, medical bills for my husband’s dialysis. I took a bribe from a high-rolling VIP guest to look the other way while confidential corporate data was downloaded from the executive terminal on the twelfth floor."

Ethan leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Data? What kind of data?"

"Financial records," Lupita replied, looking up with haunted eyes. "Off-shore accounts, money laundering schemes linked to international syndicates, and names of politicians and board members who use the Grand Regent as a laundering machine. Arthur Pendelton runs this hotel as a front for a shadow syndicate known only as The Syndicate. When Sarah took over as lead floor supervisor—she used an alias to infiltrate the auditing department because your father was getting sick and suspected embezzlement—she found my terminal logs."

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs. "She was investigating the theft?"

"No," Lupita corrected, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "She was investigating them. She caught me crying in the laundry room one night and asked me why. I broke down and told her everything. I told her about the digital flash drive I had hidden, the one containing the master encryption keys to the syndicate’s financial database."

"Where is that flash drive?" Ethan demanded.

Lupita swallowed hard. "Sarah took it. She said she was going to take it directly to your father. But the next day... your father suffered a massive stroke that left him paralyzed and non-communicative until he passed away last year. And Sarah... Sarah realized she was being hunted."

"Hunted by whom?"

"By Pendelton’s head of security, Victor Vance—no relation to your family, just a hired butcher," Lupita said, shivering. "Sarah came to me three days before she died. She was terrified. She handed me an envelope containing that photograph and told me: 'If anything happens to me, make sure Ethan finds this photo. It’s the only proof left that I was here.' But Arthur intercepted her locker key. He searched everything. I thought the photo was destroyed."

"It wasn't," Ethan said, pulling the worn envelope from his backpack. "It was tucked inside an old photography textbook of hers that I only opened yesterday when packing for this trip."

Lupita stared at the envelope, tears pooling in the corners of her eyes. "Then you are in mortal danger, Mr. Vance. Pendelton and Victor know you’re here. They know you’re the new owner. But they don't want a new owner who asks questions. They want a tragedy—just like Sarah’s."

Before Ethan could reply, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the hallway outside.

It wasn't a knock. It was the sound of a master electronic keycard engaging the suite's door lock.

BEEP.

The green LED light on the door panel flashed.

Lupita gasped, dropping her mug. The ceramic shattered against the hardwood floor, hot tea splashing across the rug.

"They're here," Lupita whispered, grabbing Ethan’s arm with a grip like iron. "They’ve override the deadbolt from the master console!"
