Chapter 3 - The Boardroom AmbushThe emergency board meeting was scheduled for 8:00 AM in the grand glass-walled boardroom on the thirty-eighth floor. By 7:55 AM, every major stakeholder, senior partner, and investor was seated in tense silence.

The air smelled of black coffee and suppressed panic.

When the double doors opened, Alexander walked in first. He looked like a man who hadn't slept a wink; his tie was missing, his shirt collar unbuttoned, and dark shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes. Clare followed closely behind him, clutching a leather notepad, trying desperately to project an aura of unbothered professionalism.

“Mr. Carter,” Arthur Sterling, the senior-most board member, said coldly without looking up from his tablet. “You have a lot of explaining to do.”

“Gentlemen,” Alexander began, forcing a tight, confident smile onto his face as he took his seat at the head of the long glass table. “There has been a series of unfortunate administrative miscommunications regarding last night’s merger implementation. My wife—due to personal distress—has temporarily locked certain accounts, but my legal team is already filing the injunctions to—”

The boardroom doors opened again.

Emma entered.

She didn’t rush. Every step she took commanded absolute silence. She wore a crimson silk blouse beneath her charcoal blazer, her posture immaculate. Marcus Vance immediately stood up from his seat beside Alexander and bowed his head respectfully as Emma passed.

“You’re sitting in my chair, Alexander,” Emma said softly.

Alexander’s jaw tightened. “This is a corporate board meeting, Emma. Spousal disputes have no jurisdiction here. Security, please escort Mrs. Carter out.”

Not a single security guard moved. In fact, the two guards standing by the door shifted their weight to block exit routes.

“Tell him, Arthur,” Emma said, looking toward the senior board member.

Arthur Sterling cleared his throat, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “Mr. Carter, as of 7:00 AM this morning, your voting shares have been formally suspended pending a federal ethics review regarding corporate asset misuse.”

Alexander slammed his palms onto the glass table, making the water pitchers rattle. “Ethics review? On what grounds?!”

Clare stood up beside him, her face flushing bright red. “This is a kangaroo court! You can’t just strip a CEO of his authority without a formal shareholder vote—!”

“Sit down, Ms. Bennett,” Emma interrupted, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. She turned her gaze slowly toward the secretary. “Unless, of course, you’d prefer to explain to the board why corporate expense reports from Carter Industries show fifty-two thousand dollars in luxury hotel stays, high-end jewelry, and international flights billed to company accounts under the classification of ‘Client Acquisition’—while Ms. Bennett was accompanying Mr. Carter on romantic getaways.”

A collective gasp rippled through the boardroom. Several investors muttered angrily among themselves, shaking their heads.

Clare turned pale, her mouth opening and closing silently like a fish out of water. “That’s—that’s a malicious fabrication! Those were business expenses!”

“Embezzlement is a felony, Clare,” Emma replied smoothly, pulling a crisp manila folder from her briefcase and sliding it across the table toward Arthur Sterling. “And forensic accounting is terribly thorough when the person paying the auditor owns the entire firm. Here are the bank records, text logs, and flight manifests dating back fourteen months.”

Arthur opened the folder, scanned the first page for three seconds, and closed it with a grim nod. “Good God, Alexander. Are these authentic?”

“They’re out of context—” Alexander stammered, sweat beading on his forehead.

“They are entirely authentic,” Emma said, resting her hands on the back of the central leather chair. She looked down at her husband with a gaze so devoid of warmth it felt subzero. “And as the majority stakeholder and newly appointed interim CEO of Carter-Whitmore Global, my first official executive action is twofold.”

She paused, letting the heavy silence settle over the room like a physical weight.

“First: Alexander Carter is stripped of all executive authority, effective immediately.”

“You can’t do this!” Alexander roared, standing up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the floor.

“Second,” Emma continued, ignoring his outburst entirely, “Clare Bennett is terminated for gross corporate misconduct, financial fraud, and breach of employment contract, with local law enforcement currently downstairs waiting to process her arrest.”
