Chapter 7 - The Final AuditTwo months after the wedding that never was, the final legal documents arrived on Emma’s desk.

The divorce was absolute. The courts had ruled entirely in favor of Whitmore Global, granting Emma full ownership of all remaining Carter assets, intellectual properties, and patent portfolios. Alexander was legally barred from operating any tech firm or holding any corporate board position in the state of New York for the next ten years.

Clare Bennett had accepted a plea deal: three years in federal prison for corporate fraud and embezzlement, with her testimony sealing Alexander’s permanent financial ruin.

Marcus knocked twice before stepping into Emma’s office, carrying a thin manila folder.

“Final paperwork just came from the federal bankruptcy court,” Marcus said, placing it on the desk. “Alexander’s personal bank accounts have been entirely liquidated to settle outstanding tax penalties. He’s officially broke.”

Emma opened the folder, scanned the summary page, and closed it. “Is there any word on where he is staying?”

“A small, rundown motel in Queens,” Marcus replied, leaning against the edge of the desk. “He’s trying to pitch a basement-level startup idea to local angel investors, but nobody will even take his calls. His reputation in the industry is completely radioactive.”

Emma looked out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows toward the glittering skyline of Manhattan. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the city streets where yellow taxis moved like rivers of light.

She had won every battle. She had outsmarted, outmaneuvered, and utterly destroyed the man who thought he could use her as a stepping stone.

Yet, as she looked at her reflection in the glass, she felt no lingering bitterness—only absolute clarity.

“Good,” Emma said softly.

“Good?” Marcus asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes,” Emma turned back to face him, a genuine, radiant smile touching her lips for the first time in months. “Because now, I can finally start building the future I actually wanted.”
