Chapter 12 - The Emergency InjunctionThe boardroom on the thirty-eighth floor was locked down tight. Only the core executive team, the board of trustees, and Alexander’s legal representation were permitted inside.

Emma sat at the center of the glass table, her expression a mask of absolute ice. Across from her sat Alexander, radiating an unbearable aura of smug satisfaction as he leaned back in his leather chair.

“You’re playing a dangerous game, Alexander,” Marcus Vance said, slamming a file down onto the table. “These shell companies violate federal antitrust regulations. The SEC will freeze your assets within forty-eight hours.”

“Let them try,” Victor Vance intervened smoothly, adjusting his cuffs. “By the time federal investigators untangle our offshore holding structures, Whitmore Global’s stock will have plummeted by at least forty percent. The acquisition deal will collapse, and your precious company will be forced into a fire sale.”

Alexander leaned forward, resting his elbows on the glass table, staring directly into Emma’s eyes.

“You thought you could throw me out like trash,” Alexander whispered, his voice dripping with venom. “You thought your money made you untouchable. But business isn't about who has the loudest voice, Emma. It's about leverage.”

Emma didn't flinch. She slowly closed her folder, folded her hands neatly on the table, and met his gaze with a terrifying calmness.

“You’re right, Alexander. Business is about leverage,” Emma said softly. She pressed a button on her desk intercom. “Marcus, bring her in.”

Alexander’s smirk faltered slightly. “Bring who in?”

The heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open.

Clare Bennett walked into the room.

She didn't look like the glamorous secretary who had sat on the honeymoon bed drinking champagne months ago. She wore a standard gray prison jumpsuit, her wrists bound loosely in light custody bands, escorted by federal marshals. But in her hand, she clutched a thick, yellowed envelope.

Alexander stood up so fast his chair tipped over backward with a deafening crash. “Clare? What is the meaning of this?!”

Clare refused to look at him. She walked straight to the end of the table, placed the envelope down right in front of Arthur Sterling, and spoke in a quiet, trembling voice.

“When Alexander had me take the fall for the corporate embezzlement,” Clare said, her eyes fixed on the polished wood, “he forgot to mention that every single offshore transfer, every illegal shell company, and every falsified asset valuation was signed off using his personal digital encryption key.”

Alexander’s face turned the color of ash. “She’s lying! She’s a convicted felon cutting a deal!”

“I am cutting a deal,” Clare admitted coldly, finally raising her eyes to look at Alexander with pure, unadulterated hatred. “Because I realized the moment the cuffs went on my wrists that you would let me rot in federal prison forever to save your own skin. Here are the encrypted hard drives, Mr. Sterling. Every single illegal transaction linking Alexander Carter directly to Victor Vance’s syndicate.”
