Chapter 5 - The Secret LedgerThree weeks after the wedding that lasted less than five hours, the corporate restructuring of Carter-Whitmore Global was broadcast across every major financial news network from Wall Street to London.

In a penthouse office overlooking Central Park—the real penthouse, untouched by Alexander’s sleaze—Emma sat behind a massive glass desk reviewing quarterly reports.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Marcus Vance stepped in, holding a worn leather-bound notebook.

“Good morning, CEO,” Marcus said, offering a respectful smile.

“Good morning, Marcus. What’s that?” Emma asked, gesturing to the notebook.

“Clearing out Alexander’s personal desk storage from the archive room. Security found this locked inside the bottom drawer behind a false panel.” Marcus placed the notebook on her desk. “It’s not corporate paperwork. It’s a personal journal dating back five years.”

Emma frowned, running her fingers over the embossed leather cover. “Why would Alexander keep a physical journal hidden in a corporate safe?”

“Because,” Marcus said grimly, “it contains entries detailing how Alexander systematically dismantled his previous business partners before meeting you. According to these notes, the bankruptcy of his first venture wasn't an accident. He engineered it to collect insurance payouts while shifting debt onto his former co-founder.”

Emma flipped open the cover. The handwriting was sharp, jagged, and aggressive.

September 14: Whitmore girl is naive. Thinks my charm is genuine. Once the merger clears, her family's capital will clear my liabilities, and I can quietly push her out of the operating board within six months.

Emma stared at the ink on the page. A cold smile touched the corners of her lips. Even in his defeat, Alexander had underestimated her. He thought she was just a wealthy heiress who got lucky. He never knew the half of it.

“Is Clare still in custody?” Emma asked without looking up.

“Bail was denied due to flight risk and the scale of the embezzlement,” Marcus replied. “Her defense lawyer tried to strike a plea deal, offering to testify against Alexander regarding corporate tax evasion.”

“Tell the district attorney we accept the terms,” Emma said calmly. “Ensure Clare’s testimony is entered into public record by Friday morning. I want every single investor, partner, and socialite in New York to know exactly who they were dealing with.”

“Consider it done,” Marcus said, turning to leave.

“Oh, and Marcus?”

Marcus paused at the door. “Yes, Emma?”

“Have our legal team draft the final divorce papers. Grounds: fraud, infidelity, and breach of fiduciary trust. I want his signature before the end of the week, or I’ll liquidate his personal assets down to his last pair of shoes.”
